Hollywood icon Brad Pitt shared a deeply close and cherished relationship with his late mother, Jane Etta Pitt, whose passing was recently confirmed by family members. The bond between the award-winning actor and the retired school counselor spanned decades, marked by love, mutual respect, and many special moments both in private and in the public eye.
From the early days of Brad’s burgeoning career, it was clear Jane was a proud and supportive presence in his life. In interviews, Brad often spoke warmly about his parents, reflecting on their strong family values. “They weren’t strict, but they had a lot of family integrity,” he once shared during a press junket. When asked if his parents supported his leap into acting, Brad joked with a grin, “They were once I got a job. In fact, they didn’t know about it ’til I got a job.”
Jane’s pride was evident as she accompanied her son to key moments in his career. She was a radiant presence at the New York City premiere of The Devil’s Own in 1996, and again stood by Brad’s side at the Unbroken premiere in 2014. She also graced the red carpet at the 2012 Academy Awards, where Brad was nominated for Best Actor for Moneyball. Dressed in an elegant navy gown, Jane captured the spotlight in her own right that glamorous night.
Jane was no stranger to the spotlight even without Brad. In 2002, she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman for a Mother’s Day segment featuring celebrity moms. Delivering her advice with playful honesty, she quipped to Brad, “Don’t believe all the hype you read about yourself, honey — actually, you’re a short, overweight, bald guy.”
The family’s bond was further highlighted in 2020, when Jane celebrated her 80th birthday. Brad reportedly hosted the milestone celebration at his Santa Barbara mansion, going so far as to send a private jet for his parents and hand over the keys to his Goleta estate to family members. Brad’s niece, Sydney Pitt, shared heartwarming glimpses of the festivities online, posting pictures of the family in matching beach outfits with the caption, “To the best Grammy around, happy 80th. Couldn’t love you more!”
Just last June, a month before Jane’s passing, Brad gave a touching shoutout to his mother during an appearance on the Today show. Speaking to Savannah Guthrie, he said, “I gotta say hi to my mom ’cause she watches you every morning.” He ended the moment with a heartfelt, “To Jane Pitt. Love you, mom,” blowing a big kiss in her direction.
Jane’s death was confirmed by Sydney Pitt on Instagram, who honored her grandmother’s legacy with a heartfelt tribute. “My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier,” she wrote alongside throwback photos. Sydney described Jane as a woman with “the biggest heart” who cared deeply for everyone and taught valuable life lessons about strength, kindness, faith, and joy.
“She made up the silliest games just to make us laugh, and she believed in fairness, in putting others first, and doing good simply because it was the right thing to do,” Sydney reflected. “We were truly blessed to have her to love on growing up and I know she lives on through each of us.”
As of now, Brad Pitt has not issued an official statement regarding the passing of his beloved mother. But the warmth and affection he has shared publicly over the years speak volumes about the profound impact Jane Etta Pitt had on his life and the enduring legacy she leaves behind.
