Paul Mescal, the rising star known for his acclaimed performances on stage and screen, recently opened up about his experience filming the highly anticipated Gladiator II. In an appearance on CBS Mornings Wednesday, Mescal discussed his role as Lucius—the son of Maximus and Lucilla—who takes center stage 15 years after his father’s death in the arena.

Mescal shared a glimpse into the physical preparation required for the role, joking about his muscular transformation. “I was like, look at myself with some degree of jealousy,” he quipped, reflecting on the dedication needed to bring Lucius to life.

The actor revealed he secured the part after a brief Zoom conversation with legendary director Ridley Scott, underscoring the modern realities of casting in today’s film industry.

Among the highlights of filming, Mescal singled out his time on set with Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington. “I was nose to nose with the great Denzel,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite things about acting in general and it’s kind of magnified when you’re up with Denzel. These performances that people deeply admire, I am getting a front row seat.”

Mescal praised Washington’s masterful command of his craft, noting the actor’s ability to balance intense performances with the practical demands of filmmaking. “He just knows how to modulate what’s required innately,” Mescal explained.

The film’s premiere in Dublin held special significance for Mescal. “Dublin really forced me or reminded me to be present,” he said. “Being welcomed home like that was really special.”

Looking ahead to the film’s release, Mescal expressed hope that audiences will connect with Gladiator II in their own way. “It’s a film that gives an audience a great opportunity to take away what they want. If you go in expecting to be entertained, pardon the pun, see what comes out.”

With Gladiator II poised to continue the legacy of the original 2000 epic, Mescal’s reflections offer an exciting glimpse into the making of a film that balances tradition with fresh storytelling, anchored by a new generation of talent.
