Rapper-turned-actor A$AP Rocky is proving that he’s more than just a music icon—he’s ready to take on Hollywood. In a recent interview with Variety, Rocky, 36, discussed his experience starring alongside the legendary Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s upcoming film Highest 2 Lowest. The film, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, offers Rocky the opportunity to work with two of his idols, and the rapper doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the weight of this professional milestone.

When asked if he felt nervous about acting opposite Washington, an Oscar-winning actor with decades of experience, Rocky’s response was refreshingly confident. “Nah, I was born for this,” he declared. His assuredness speaks to his deep commitment to his craft, both in music and now in film. “I’m not gonna waste nobody’s time. This is what I do—this is the same approach you would take to making an album or to directing or designing anything: You’ve got to give it your all,” Rocky continued, emphasizing his dedication to any project he undertakes.

In Highest 2 Lowest, Rocky portrays Yung Felon, an aspiring rapper seeking recognition from Washington’s character, a music mogul. The first trailer for the film gives a glimpse into the emotional and intense nature of the story, with Washington delivering a powerful monologue about the highs and lows of success. Rocky’s role in the movie is a standout, with his performance alongside a talented cast that includes Jeffrey Wright and Ilfenesh Hadera.

For Rocky, working with Washington was a dream come true. “But trust me, it was difficult to not fan the f— out every millisecond of the f—— duration. It was crazy—it’s f——- Denzel, man,” he admitted. Despite his own success, Rocky makes it clear that he remains a humble admirer of Washington’s work. “I’m always gonna be a student and a fan of certain people, and I’m always going to give them their flowers,” he said, further revealing his respect and admiration for the legendary actor.

Rocky also shared his love for some of Washington’s iconic films, including Juice and Malcolm X. His openness about his admiration for Washington highlights his authenticity and recognition of the importance of those who paved the way for him in both the entertainment industry and beyond.

Highest 2 Lowest is set to hit select theaters on August 22, followed by a release on Apple TV+ on September 5. With Rocky’s confidence and respect for his co-stars, the film is sure to be a significant step in his evolving career as both a musician and actor. Fans can look forward to seeing how he balances the world of hip-hop with his growing presence in the film industry.
