Denzel Washington has addressed the soaring ticket prices for the current Broadway production of Othello, in which he stars, acknowledging the significant demand for seats, with some orchestra tickets selling for as much as $900. While the price tag may seem steep to many theatergoers, Washington reminded fans that there are also more affordable options available, with some tickets starting as low as $50.
Speaking at the Entertainment Community Fund Gala on April 21, the 70-year-old actor shared his thoughts on the varied pricing structure. “They’re selling [tickets] as low as $50. People don’t talk about that,” Washington said in a candid interview with Entertainment Tonight. He also acknowledged the high demand for tickets, noting the excitement surrounding the show’s run, which stars Washington alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
When asked if the immense popularity of Othello made him feel like “Beyoncé and Jay-Z,” Washington laughed and responded humbly, “I haven’t quite felt like that,” adding, “I can’t sing or rap.” Despite the overwhelming attention, Washington remained grounded, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a well-received production.
Humble Reflection on Success and Giving Back
Washington took a moment to reflect on his career, expressing deep humility and appreciation for the success he’s experienced over the years. “I’ve been blessed beyond measure for a long time,” he said. “I’m not bragging, but I’ve been a part of sold-out shows before. God has blessed me with a great ability, and I’m humbled by the reaction and the response that we’re getting, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to… use my celebrity to help others. That’s what it’s about.”
He further elaborated on his approach to life, sharing his philosophy on the different stages of his career. “I’m in the service business,” Washington explained. “You know you… learn the first part of your life, you earn the second part of your life and you return in the third part of your life. I’m in the return phase of life. So I’m returning, I’m giving back to others…”
Director Kenny Leon on the Commercial Success of Othello
Washington’s comments come on the heels of similar remarks made by Othello’s director, Kenny Leon, who was recently asked about the high ticket prices in an interview with Daily Mail. Leon compared the cost of seeing Othello to the price of attending an L.A. Lakers game or a Beyoncé concert, stating, “With a commercial industry, people are paying what they think it’s worth.” He recounted a conversation with a patron who had purchased a $921 ticket, saying the audience member expressed that he didn’t want a refund and hoped to return to the show. “That’s what I feel proud of every night,” Leon added, speaking about the diverse audience and the pride he feels in the production’s success at the box office.
Leon also noted that the production is committed to accessibility for all, with initiatives in place to ensure that people from all economic backgrounds can experience the play. “We have student tickets for the show,” he said, “and we also have digital lotteries every day” to help those unable to afford the full-price tickets.
The Historic Broadway Revival of Othello
The current production of Othello marks the first time in over 40 years that the Shakespearean tragedy has been staged on Broadway. The last revival, which took place in 1982, featured James Earl Jones in the titular role, alongside Christopher Plummer as Iago and Dianne Wiest as Desdemona. This limited 15-week engagement, which opened on March 23, is set to run through June 8, 2025. Tickets are currently on sale for those eager to witness this historic Broadway production featuring two of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors.
While the price of admission may vary, Washington’s reflections and the efforts of the production team to offer a range of ticket options reflect the inclusive spirit of the show. With Othello receiving both critical acclaim and audience enthusiasm, it’s clear that this Broadway revival has struck a chord with theatergoers—and with Washington, it’s not just about the ticket prices but the opportunity to give back through his work and legacy.
