Iconic Marilyn Monroe Statue Finds New Location in Palm Springs

The relocation of the 26-foot-tall Forever Marilyn statue to Downtown Park in Palm Springs marks a turning point in the city’s public art landscape. Created by artist Seward Johnson and inspired by the iconic scene from Marilyn Monroe’s 1955 film The Seven Year Itch, the sculpture has been a lightning rod for both admiration and controversy. Its new home reflects a compromise aimed at preserving its tourism appeal while addressing community concerns.

A Beloved and Controversial Icon

The Forever Marilyn statue has a storied history in Palm Springs. First displayed in the city from 2012 to 2014, it returned in 2021, standing on Museum Way in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum. With Monroe’s strong connection to the city—she was discovered at the Racquet Club in 1949 and later owned a home in the area—many saw the statue’s presence as a fitting tribute. However, not everyone agreed.

Critics objected to its placement, calling the statue tacky and accusing it of perpetuating outdated, sexist imagery. Its size and pose—featuring Monroe’s billowing skirt and visible underwear—sparked protests, legal battles, and debates about public art’s role. The Palm Springs City Council and PS Resorts, the tourism organization responsible for bringing the statue back, faced nearly $500,000 in legal fees stemming from challenges to its location.

A New Location Amid Continued Debate

In response to the controversy, city officials and PS Resorts reached a settlement in 2024 to move Forever Marilyn from Museum Way. After several months of planning, the statue was relocated in February 2025 to Downtown Park, a central gathering space featuring palm groves and water features. The move, though just 75 feet away from its original spot, aims to reduce its impact on the museum’s view and provide a more community-oriented setting.

The new placement is intended to be permanent, with PS Resorts announcing a 25-year timeline for the statue’s current location. The park’s central downtown position ensures the statue remains a key attraction, drawing tourists and maintaining its role in the city’s cultural identity.

Mixed Reactions and Long-Term Impact

While some residents are relieved by the relocation, others remain divided. The statue continues to spark conversations about the intersection of public art, community values, and tourism. For supporters, Forever Marilyn is an iconic piece that celebrates a beloved film legend and generates economic benefits for Palm Springs. For detractors, it represents a missed opportunity for more inclusive and forward-thinking public art.

Regardless of opinion, Forever Marilyn has become an indelible part of Palm Springs’ identity. As the statue settles into its new home, it stands not only as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe but also as a reminder of the ongoing dialogue between art, history, and community values.
