Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s $65 million Gulfstream G650 private jet experienced a serious mechanical issue that forced the Hollywood actor to make an emergency landing, halting his trip just 35 to 40 minutes after takeoff.
Johnson, who was en route from Hawaii to Houston, Texas, for the opening of the United Football League’s (UFL) second season, shared details of the terrifying incident with his fans on social media. The former WWE champion and co-owner of the UFL revealed that the malfunction required the plane to turn back to Hawaii, leaving him unable to attend the highly anticipated event.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Johnson explained the situation: “I’m here back home in Hawaii, and I was scheduled right now to be in Houston, Texas,” he said. “Right now, I was going to be on the field in Houston, Texas hyping up the crowd, getting them ready with mana and electricity as we kicked off our UFL, our United Football League season number two, live on Fox.”
He continued, expressing his disappointment: “I was ready to go. Man, I was super pumped to get down there to Texas, to rock and roll with all the players and fans and coaches. I’m just so super bummed that I can’t be there and I’m so sorry.”
According to Johnson, the flight was cut short due to an issue with the jet’s hydraulics system, which overheated shortly after takeoff. The actor praised his pilot for his calm and clear communication throughout the ordeal. “The pilot comes back to me, he gets down on one knee, and he is face-to-face with me. It’s just me on the plane. Just me and the crew,” Johnson recalled. “He says, ‘Mr. Johnson, I’m sorry to inform you but we cannot continue to fly over the ocean. We have a problem. We have to turn the plane around, and we have to land back in Hawaii.’”
The pilot assured Johnson that the situation was manageable but emphasized the importance of safety, especially over the ocean. “He said there are some issues we can work out as we are in the air, and then there’s some that we are not going to take a chance, especially over the ocean,” Johnson shared. “When the computer of the plane is saying don’t fly anymore over the ocean, you gotta get back to land.”
In the midst of the emergency, Johnson admitted that fear crossed his mind. “I started to think the worst,” he said. “Is this it? Is this how I check out?” However, the actor was reassured by the pilot’s professionalism and the support of the flight crew. “The flight attendant, she was amazing, she goes, ‘Mr. Johnson, can I get you anything?’”
Thankfully, the situation was handled without further incident, and the plane returned safely to Hawaii. While Johnson’s fans may have missed his energetic presence at the UFL season opener, they could rest easy knowing that the actor and his crew made it back safely to the island.
Johnson’s candid recounting of the experience highlights the gravity of in-flight emergencies, even for celebrities with the most advanced aircraft. The ordeal served as a reminder of how quickly situations can change, and the importance of relying on skilled professionals during moments of crisis.
