Jason Momoa’s next DC Universe role has been making headlines, but it turns out the seeds were planted much earlier than fans might have guessed. James Gunn recently shared a behind-the-scenes moment on social media, revealing the text that kicked off the conversation about casting Momoa as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
The exchange took place back in 2022 when Gunn was first announced as co-head of Warner Bros. DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. On the morning of the announcement, Gunn received a short but emphatic text from Momoa: “F**king Lobo.” Gunn’s response? “Dude, I’ve said you should be Lobo for years. No lie.”
The screenshot of their texts, posted on X (formerly Twitter), quickly caught fans’ attention. Gunn captioned it: “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios.” He also added that it was the first time he and Momoa discussed bringing the fan-favorite intergalactic bounty hunter to life.
While Gunn didn’t confirm exactly when this casting dream became a reality, his recent remarks show just how excited he is to see Momoa in the role. “I can’t wait to share that with all of you,” Gunn wrote, expressing his enthusiasm for Momoa’s performance.
Momoa’s Lobo will make his debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which stars House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. The film will be the second major entry in Gunn and Safran’s revamped DCU, following the release of Superman: Legacy in 2025. Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
As fans await more details, Gunn’s text reveal adds a layer of excitement and anticipation, showing that this casting decision was in the works long before any official announcements. Now, with Momoa gearing up to bring the cigar-chomping, motorcycle-riding antihero to the big screen, DC fans can look forward to a Lobo performance years in the making.
