Denzel Washington and Spike Lee Reunite After 20 Years—But Did It Really Feel Like Two Decades?

When Denzel Washington and Spike Lee last collaborated nearly two decades ago, they left behind a legacy of iconic films: Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man. Now, the acclaimed actor and director have reunited for Highest 2 Lowest, a project that brings their creative partnership full circle.
The upcoming crime film is inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, a tense tale of a businessman ensnared in a dangerous kidnapping plot. Though Lee describes his version as a “reinterpretation” rather than a straightforward remake, the film promises the same emotional intensity and sharp social commentary that have defined his best work. Highest 2 Lowest filmed in New York City last year and is slated for release in 2025.
For Washington, the long gap since their last collaboration hasn’t dulled their chemistry. In a recent interview with The New York Times, the actor reflected on returning to work with Lee, saying, “It didn’t feel like 20 years. It felt like we picked up where we left off.” Washington also hinted that their collaboration might continue beyond this film, praising Lee’s distinctive vision: “Spike is consistently Spike, and I love that about him. I just like the way his brain works.”
Lee echoed that sentiment in an interview with Variety, noting how natural it felt to reunite. “We’re brothers,” he said. “It’s 18 years since we shot our last film together. That’s a gap. But I was surprised it didn’t feel that way.” Their long-standing rapport allowed them to dive back into the creative process without missing a beat.
In addition to Washington and Lee’s reunion, Highest 2 Lowest brings back key collaborators from their earlier work, including cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who last teamed with Lee on Chi-Raq. The film’s cast also includes Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky, and Ice Spice.
Although an exact release date hasn’t been announced, the anticipation for Highest 2 Lowest continues to build. With Lee and Washington at the helm once again, audiences can expect a thought-provoking crime drama that reaffirms their status as one of cinema’s most formidable actor-director duos.
