Emma Heming has reached a bittersweet milestone in her journey as a caregiver for her husband, Bruce Willis, who was diagnosed with aphasia and later with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). As she continues to navigate the challenges of caring for the Die Hard star, Heming has been sharing her personal experience through a book that reflects her emotional journey.
In an emotional Instagram post over the weekend, the founder of MakeTime Wellness revealed that she is nearing the completion of her book. “Oh boy, I just finished editing the whole book. I don’t know what draft we’re on,” she said, with tears in her eyes. Heming confessed that reading through the chapters brought her to tears, especially as she approached the conclusion. “The conclusion just sent me over the edge,” she added.
Heming’s book, which she describes as deeply personal, aims to serve as a resource for caregivers. “This book is very personal, and my hope is that when it finally lands into your hands, it will help you as much as this book has helped me,” she shared. She went on to emphasize that the book is for caregivers, with a specific focus on reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles. “The idea that caregiving is a solo mission is outdated. Caregiving is a societal responsibility,” she said, expressing hope that her book could spark a shift in how society views and supports those in caregiving roles.
Her advocacy and transparency about the difficulties of caregiving have resonated with many, with fans quickly offering their support in the comments section of her post. “What a wonderful thing to do for others, especially when you’re going through it yourself,” one supporter wrote. Others echoed similar sentiments, praising Heming’s dedication to raising awareness and offering much-needed resources for those facing similar challenges.
Since Bruce Willis’ diagnosis, Emma has remained a staunch advocate for the FTD community, using her platform to educate others about the disease. In 2023, she wrote an insightful piece for Maria Shriver’s newsletter The Sunday Paper, where she discussed the difficulties of revealing Bruce’s diagnosis to the world. She emphasized the need for greater awareness, explaining, “The world needs to know that not all dementia is Alzheimer’s and that not all dementia impacts memory.”
Emma and Bruce’s journey together began in 2007 when they met at their trainer’s gym and married in 2009. They share two daughters, Mabel Ray and Evelyn Penn, while Bruce is also a father to daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah from his previous marriage to Demi Moore. As a devoted mother and wife, Emma’s resilience in the face of Bruce’s diagnosis continues to inspire many, and her forthcoming book promises to offer invaluable insight and support to caregivers everywhere.
