As the film industry navigates the challenges of the ongoing pandemic, with theatres closed and productions delayed, a rare gem from the past has emerged to offer a glimpse of Hollywood’s future. In an era where streaming platforms dominate the scene, an early piece of movie history has surfaced—showing a young Angelina Jolie in an acting class, offering fans a rare look at her burgeoning talent before she became the international star we know today.

Uploaded to YouTube by Dagmar Stansova, a fellow acting student and Jolie’s partner in the footage, the video captures a raw and intense moment from the 1990s, when Jolie would have been between the ages of 16 and 20. The clip shows Jolie in a highly focused and emotional acting exercise, showcasing the early signs of the emotional depth and complexity that would later define her career.

The footage, which was never meant for public consumption, was described by Stansova as an exercise in “instrument work” rather than scene work. In acting, “instrument work” refers to the practice of honing an actor’s emotional range and physical expression, allowing them to explore and express a full spectrum of emotions. As Stansova explains, the class was not focused on scripted material or traditional scene breakdowns. “We had no scripted material. It is all improvised,” she shared, emphasizing that the exercise was about expanding their ability to connect deeply with their emotions through their bodies and voices.

In the footage, Jolie shows remarkable control over her emotional range, moving from moments of rage to laughter, and then transitioning into sadness. At one point, she tells Stansova, “I need to hurt you. I want to hurt you,” showcasing an intensity and command of her emotions that would go on to define many of her most iconic roles.

Stansova praised Jolie’s performance, noting how the young actress brought a unique sense of style to the scene. “I thought your eyes were wonderful. I especially liked the movement in the scene for you. Something was really connected,” Stansova says. “I felt for you a real sense of style. You didn’t allow it to just keep going there, you changed it lots of times. You found the humor and you found that and you took the scene in different directions.”

This footage offers an intimate, unpolished look at the early stages of Angelina Jolie’s acting career, showing how her distinctive approach to her craft was evident even before she became an internationally recognized star. As fans continue to reflect on her illustrious career, this rare peek into her past serves as a reminder of her dedication to her craft and her journey from a young actress exploring her emotional range to an Academy Award-winning powerhouse in Hollywood.

As cinemas struggle to regain their footing in the wake of the pandemic, it’s moments like these—returning to the past, revisiting forgotten clips, and exploring the stories behind our favorite stars—that keep the magic of cinema alive.
