Keith Urban, the country music icon behind hits like Blue Ain’t Your Color, recently shared a deeply personal story about a missed opportunity that still haunts him. The singer revealed that he once received a personal call from Prince, inviting him to a jam session — but exhaustion got in the way.

“I still can’t believe I said no,” Urban recalled. “Prince called me one night — Prince! — and asked if I wanted to come over to play. And I said, ‘Man, I just landed. I’m wrecked. Maybe next time.’ I hung up, fell asleep… and there never was a next time. I slept through magic.”

Urban explained that he had just flown from Australia to Los Angeles after consecutive shows and was completely drained. “I thought, ‘I’ll catch him next week.’ But you don’t catch Prince next week,” he said. “He lived in a different rhythm. When inspiration hit, he moved. And if you weren’t there, you missed it.”

The invitation reportedly came after Prince had seen Urban perform live and admired his guitar work. “He told someone, ‘That guy’s got soul,’” Urban recalled. “I didn’t believe it until I heard his voice on the phone. I thought it was a prank at first. But it was really him — that soft, calm voice. It still gives me chills.”

Reflecting on Prince’s passing in 2016, Urban said the memory of that night struck him profoundly. “One of the greatest musicians who ever lived wanted to make music with me — and I was too tired. It broke my heart.”

Urban says the experience taught him a lasting lesson: never let fatigue or hesitation rob you of extraordinary moments. “I realized how easily we let exhaustion or fear rob us of magic,” he said. “We tell ourselves, ‘There’ll be another chance,’ but sometimes there isn’t. I’ve tried to never say no to inspiration since that night — no matter how tired I am.”

Even though he never got to play with Prince, Urban cherishes the call as a pivotal moment in his life. “He was beyond genre, beyond ego — pure artistry,” he said. “That call alone changed me. It reminded me that greatness doesn’t wait for your schedule. It shows up when it wants to — and you have to be awake enough to answer.”

Now, whenever fatigue creeps in on tour, Urban recalls that night as a warning and a motivator: “Whenever I’m tempted to turn down a jam or skip a studio session, I hear his voice in my head — and I think, ‘Don’t sleep through magic again.’”

It’s a poignant reminder of how fleeting and precious creative moments can be — and how sometimes, the magic comes in the chances we almost missed.
