Jennifer Lawrence Says Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet Caused Her “Absolute Misery” on Don’t Look Up Set

Jennifer Lawrence may have had an impressive time on the awards circuit for Don’t Look Up, but not every day on set was smooth sailing — especially one particular scene that left her feeling, in her own words, “in absolute misery.”

The 2021 satirical black comedy, directed by Adam McKay, follows two astronomers attempting to warn the world of an approaching comet that will wipe out humanity. The ensemble cast included Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, and Jonah Hill. But during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Lawrence revealed that filming a car scene with DiCaprio and Chalamet was “an annoying day of my life.”

“They Drove Me Crazy That Day”

Colbert asked about the legality of having all three stars in a car during filming. Lawrence brushed off the joke about legality and instead launched into a playful but telling account of her co-stars’ behavior.

Chalamet, she recalled, was “just excited to be out of the house” — the scene was one of his first on set, and production was happening during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think it was like his first scene,” Lawrence said, explaining that everyone was eager to be working again after months of lockdown.

DiCaprio, meanwhile, had taken control of the car’s soundtrack. “He picked the song that was playing in the car,” Lawrence said, before mimicking him in an exaggerated voice: “‘You know, this song was about blah, blah, blah.’” Her imitation drew laughs from Colbert, who joked about her “uncanny impersonation” of DiCaprio — to which Lawrence quipped back, “With piercing blue eyes.”

A Rare “Hellish” Moment

While Lawrence made it clear she was joking and fond of her co-stars, she didn’t hold back about her mood that day: “I don’t know, I was just in absolute misery that day. It was hell.”

Whether it was the pandemic-era filming conditions, the dynamic in the car, or simply the chaos of the scene, Lawrence admitted the combination tested her patience. Still, she didn’t suggest the entire shoot was unpleasant — and her candid, humorous take on the moment fits her long-standing reputation for unfiltered honesty during interviews.

In the end, Don’t Look Up became a Netflix hit and an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, proving that even a “hellish” day on set can lead to award-season gold. But for Lawrence, that car ride with DiCaprio and Chalamet will remain one scene she’ll never forget — for all the wrong reasons.
