Mark Wahlberg has revealed that his most loyal costar isn’t a fellow actor—it’s his canine co-star, Ukai. During the filming of Arthur the King, Wahlberg formed a deep bond with Ukai, the dog who plays Arthur in the movie. So strong was this connection that Wahlberg tried to buy Ukai from the trainer, willing to pay any price to bring the dog home. However, the trainer declined, citing the special bond they shared and the importance of keeping Ukai where he was most needed.
Wahlberg’s children also wanted the dog to join their family, but the actor understood and respected the trainer’s decision. The film itself is based on the true story of adventure racer Mikael Lindnord and his relationship with a stray dog named Arthur during an endurance race in Ecuador. Wahlberg portrays a fictionalized version of Lindnord, while Ukai brought Arthur’s spirit to life on screen.
Their off-screen connection was so genuine that Wahlberg and Ukai later teamed up for a public service announcement promoting pet adoption in collaboration with the Best Friends Animal Society, further showcasing their unique bond.
Interestingly, despite being allergic to dogs, Wahlberg owns four pets and manages his allergies with daily medication. His daughter Grace takes on much of the caregiving responsibilities at home, ensuring the dogs are well loved and cared for.
Wahlberg’s affection for Ukai highlights the powerful and often unexpected connections that can develop between humans and animals on set—reminding us that sometimes the most loyal costars come on four paws.
