Jim Carrey is often celebrated for his comedic talents, but one of his most daring films, I Love You Phillip Morris (2009), nearly never made it to the big screen. Today, the dark comedy stands as a cult classic—particularly within the LGBTQ+ community—thanks to its bold storytelling and Carrey’s compelling performance.
Based on the true story of Steven Jay Russell, a charismatic con artist who comes out as gay and orchestrates elaborate schemes to reunite with his lover Phillip Morris, the film blends humor with heartfelt moments. Despite this compelling narrative and Carrey’s acclaimed portrayal, I Love You Phillip Morris faced significant challenges before its release.
The film initially struggled to find a U.S. distributor, largely due to its explicit depiction of gay sexuality. To navigate these hurdles, the filmmakers re-edited parts of the movie, addressing concerns from distributors. After multiple delays, the film finally premiered in the United States in October 2009.
Critics responded positively, awarding the film a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praising Carrey’s nuanced performance—considered by many as one of his best. Its unique balance of comedy and pathos, alongside its unapologetic exploration of LGBTQ+ themes, cemented its status as a beloved cult favorite in queer cinema.
Interestingly, Carrey’s 1985 teen comedy Once Bitten, where he plays a young man seduced by a female vampire, has also gained cult status. While not explicitly connected to LGBTQ+ themes, the film’s campy style and Carrey’s energetic performance have endeared it to audiences who appreciate offbeat and nostalgic entertainment.
Both films highlight Carrey’s versatility and willingness to embrace unconventional roles. I Love You Phillip Morris in particular remains a significant milestone, proving that even movies once threatened with cancellation can find lasting impact and devoted audiences by telling authentic, daring stories.
