Anna Kendrick Opens Up About Working Through Trauma While Filming Alice, Darling

Anna Kendrick is known for her vibrant roles as the upbeat, quirky friend or heroine in films like Pitch Perfect and Twilight. But her latest performance in the psychological thriller Alice, Darling reveals a deeply personal and raw side of the actress that few have seen before.

In Alice, Darling, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and hit U.S. theaters in January 2023, Kendrick plays Alice—a young woman trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship. When Alice lies to her controlling boyfriend to spend a week away with her female friends, she begins to confront the harsh reality of her situation and the codependency that binds her to him. As she attempts to break free, the tension escalates, revealing the dangerous consequences of emotional abuse.

What makes Kendrick’s portrayal especially authentic is that she has shared publicly that she herself endured emotional abuse for six years. It was only after receiving the script for Alice, Darling that she found the courage and clarity to fully extricate herself from that relationship.

In a candid interview with IndieWire, Kendrick reflected on how discussing her past during press appearances happened almost unintentionally. “The first interview where I talked about it, it was just sort of happening and… I was going, like, ‘What are you doing? What are you saying?’” she said. For Kendrick, working on the film and promoting it became part of a healing process—a way to reclaim her story and raise awareness about psychological abuse.

On The Kelly Clarkson Show, she emphasized that while the film centers on the dark realities of emotional abuse, it’s ultimately a story about the power of friendship and support systems. “That’s how I got out,” she said, crediting her friends as a lifeline.

Critics have given Alice, Darling mixed reviews, with some suggesting it leans more toward a story of female friendship than a conventional thriller. Nonetheless, Kendrick’s performance has been widely praised for its emotional depth and vulnerability.

By channeling her own experience into Alice’s story, Anna Kendrick has transformed Alice, Darling into more than just a film—it’s a courageous, resonant testament to survival and the strength found in connection.
