As the eagerly anticipated Formula 1 film races toward its release, star Brad Pitt and director Joseph Kosinski have opened up about the pivotal role seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton played in bringing the high-speed world of F1 authentically to the big screen.

Hamilton’s involvement wasn’t just a cameo or technical consultation—it was a full-throttle collaboration that elevated the project’s realism and emotional depth. What began as a casual conversation between Hamilton and Kosinski quickly evolved into an extensive partnership, with Hamilton dedicating countless hours to ensuring every detail was just right.

“When Lewis came on, then it was a go. And it was a simple phone call for me,” Pitt said. “I remember we sat down that first time—and that’s less about racing and more about just sitting with a gem of a human being. There’s a reason… champions are made, I think, beyond just talent. It’s also how they carry themselves and how they face the world. And he is just a gem and a gent. Really, really.”

Pitt’s admiration for Hamilton extends far beyond his prowess behind the wheel. The 61-year-old actor highlighted the champion’s generosity and patience: “He would give us like 12 hours in a day. We’d just sit and just query and throw questions at him—‘What about this?’—and he really helped shape us—shape this film.”

Director Joseph Kosinski, fresh off the success of Top Gun: Maverick, echoed these sentiments, describing Hamilton’s contribution as “invaluable.” Kosinski shared, “Lewis Hamilton has been involved every step of the way—from creating the original story with me to getting every detail of the cars, from what gear you’re in to what it sounds like when you’re on the back straight.”

Hamilton’s insistence on authenticity even increased production costs, but the team welcomed it without hesitation. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer expressed heartfelt gratitude for Hamilton and the F1 community’s support: “Everything that he has brought to this movie, I can’t even express our thanks to him and all the folks from F1 who made this all possible.”

Bruckheimer added, “But the authenticity that he brings, we just can’t imagine what goes into what a driver does and what the sport brings to an audience. Sometimes we don’t like to hear some of the things he says, because it costs us more money to fix things, but we’re all in, we want to make it great, and he’s certainly helping us.”

As F1 hits theaters, fans can look forward to a film shaped by the insights and passion of one of racing’s greatest legends, brought to life through Brad Pitt’s heartfelt performance and Joseph Kosinski’s visionary direction.
