The $500 Million Role Tom Cruise Turned Down: “It Just Didn’t Feel Like It Was Gonna Work”

Tom Cruise’s rise to Hollywood superstardom is the stuff of legend. From turning down a path in the priesthood to dazzling audiences with iconic performances in Top Gun, Rain Man, and Born on the Fourth of July, Cruise has consistently been a commanding presence on the big screen. By the 1990s, he was one of the highest-paid actors in the world, with box office hits and hefty paychecks that gave him the luxury to be choosy about his roles.

One of the most surprising stories in Hollywood lore is that Cruise once had the chance to play Tony Stark—Iron Man—in what would become one of the most successful franchises in film history. Yet, in a 2005 interview, Cruise revealed why he passed on what might have been a $500 million payday.

“They came to me at a certain point and, when I do something, I wanna do it right,” Cruise said. “If I commit to something, it has to be done in a way that I know it’s gonna be something special. And as it was lining up, it just didn’t feel to me like it was gonna work. I need to be able to make decisions and make the film as great as it can be, and it just didn’t go down that road that way.”

At the time, the Iron Man project was far from the polished Marvel juggernaut we know today. The studio was grappling with rewrites and even attempted to bring Quentin Tarantino on board as director—an audacious combination that certainly would have sparked interest. Eventually, Marvel Studios scrapped earlier efforts and started fresh, naming Iron Man its first independent feature in 2006.

Jon Favreau was hired as director, initially eyeing Sam Rockwell for the lead role. But after witnessing Robert Downey Jr.’s screen test, Favreau’s mind was made up. Downey described the audition as “one of those rushes” akin to performing in a massive sports arena—an exhilarating moment that sealed his casting.

Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark redefined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is estimated to have earned him between $435 million and $600 million—a staggering sum that stands as one of the most lucrative acting roles in Hollywood history.

Of course, Cruise didn’t lose out entirely. His Mission: Impossible franchise has grossed nearly $600 million worldwide, securing his place as one of the industry’s most bankable stars. With such a formidable career, Cruise likely isn’t losing sleep over passing on Iron Man—though it remains one of Hollywood’s most fascinating “what if” stories.
