With a legacy spanning over six decades, 27 films, and seven actors portraying the iconic British spy, James Bond remains one of cinema’s most beloved franchises. But among the many adventures of 007, which film stands out as the absolute best? According to Rotten Tomatoes—one of the world’s most trusted film review platforms—the answer is clear: Goldfinger.

Rotten Tomatoes’ ‘Tomatometer’ score, which aggregates viewer and critic reviews, crowns the 1964 classic Goldfinger with an impressive 99% rating, making it the highest-ranked film in the franchise. This near-perfect score reflects a widespread consensus among fans and critics that Goldfinger set the gold standard for all Bond films that followed.

The origins of James Bond trace back to Ian Fleming’s novels, beginning in 1953, chronicling the adventures of the suave British Secret Service agent. The cinematic journey began in 1962 with Dr No, introducing audiences to Sean Connery’s charismatic portrayal of 007. Dr No itself remains highly regarded, but it was Goldfinger—the third film in the series—that catapulted Bond into blockbuster territory, combining the budgets of the first two films to deliver a truly spectacular spy thriller.

Rotten Tomatoes reviewers praise Goldfinger for its perfect blend of action, style, and memorable characters. One critic wrote, “The Bond film to which all others must be compared. The girls, the guns, the gadgets, the locations, the villains, the evil master plan… it may not have been the first Bond film, but it is, and likely always will be, the standard-bearer.”

Another reviewer echoed this sentiment, saying: “Goldfinger hands down is one of the best in the entire series. It simply has everything great to offer: you have action, one-liners, a great villain, a memorable Bond girl and Sean Connery as Bond. Absolutely iconic.”

Close behind at number two on Rotten Tomatoes’ ranking is the 1963 film From Russia With Love, also starring Connery, with a 97% score. Known for its “spectacular” scenes and thrilling plot, it remains a fan favorite. One viewer commented, “Sean Connery will never truly be replaced as Bond. And, if Dr No wasn’t enough proof of that, look no further than this funny, thrilling and sexy adventure.”

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the 1967 Casino Royale spoof starring David Niven holds the distinction as the lowest-rated Bond film, illustrating just how far the franchise has evolved.

As the James Bond series continues to expand and reinvent itself, the legacy of the early Connery films—especially Goldfinger—remains a towering influence on the spy genre. For fans and newcomers alike, Goldfinger is the film that defines the very essence of 007: style, suspense, and unforgettable cinematic flair.
