Queen Latifah recently revealed a surprising and disheartening behind-the-scenes truth about the iconic ’90s sitcom Living Single: despite its success and cultural impact, the cast faced pressure from network executives to lose weight.
In an interview with REVOLT, the legendary actress and musician—known for her unapologetic confidence and trailblazing career—shared that even as Living Single dominated ratings among Black and Latino households, the producers pushed for the cast to slim down. “We had the No. 1 show among Black and Latino households, and we were told that the word came down that they wanted us to lose weight,” Latifah said. “And my instant reaction to that was absolutely not. I’m not losing a pound.”
Latifah emphasized how important authentic representation was to the show’s success and legacy. “We look like what real women look like. We are representing what four women from Brooklyn look like. And we all look different from one to the next,” she explained. This diversity, she said, resonated deeply with viewers who saw themselves reflected on screen—not the narrow, unrealistic standards often imposed by Hollywood.
She also expressed frustration at the disconnect between the show’s popularity and the network’s misguided demands. “We have such a successful show, we’re doing all the right things, and this is the one thing that you actually have to say, and you don’t even know what you’re talking about. Maybe you should go take a trip to Brooklyn over the summer and see what people from Brooklyn actually look like. That’s the way I felt at that time.”
Queen Latifah’s remarks highlight ongoing conversations about body positivity and representation in the entertainment industry—conversations that Living Single helped spark decades ago by showcasing strong, diverse Black women on screen.
Toward the end of the interview, Latifah also hinted at exciting news for fans of her music. While she didn’t reveal specifics, she teased that new music is on the horizon. “…Everybody wants all those things, and I have a lot of that at my disposal. So, I’m just trying to figure out what comes first. We are definitely gonna drop some new music, and we’ll see what happens from there.”
As Queen Latifah continues to break barriers and challenge norms, her candid reflections remind us of the importance of staying true to oneself—both on screen and beyond.
