How The Beatles Influenced Billie Eilish: Bridging Generations Through Music and Message

At first glance, Billie Eilish and The Beatles might seem worlds apart—separated by over half a century of music evolution and cultural shifts. Yet, beneath the surface, striking parallels connect these two iconic acts. Both have revolutionized pop music by challenging mainstream norms and ushering in new eras of artistic expression.
Like The Beatles in the 1960s, Billie Eilish has redefined what it means to be a teenage pop star today. Tackling themes like sexuality, climate change, and gender identity, Eilish speaks directly to her peers in a way few pop artists have before. Her brother and creative partner Finneas highlights this connection: “Many pop stars kind of patronise — they’re like 25, talking to 15-year olds. [Billie] is the same age as a lot of the kids that are listening to her.” This generational closeness mirrors how John, Paul, George, and Ringo resonated with the youth during the countercultural upheaval of their time.
Eilish’s admiration for The Beatles goes beyond influence—it’s a heartfelt homage. Over the years, she’s performed Beatles classics like Paul McCartney’s “Yesterday” at the Oscars and delivered a ukulele rendition of “I Will” on Carpool Karaoke. These tributes underscore the deep debt she owes to Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison. Actress Maggie Baird, Eilish’s mother, recalls how The Beatles’ music introduced Billie and Finneas to the fundamentals of songwriting early on. “Because the class was for kids,” Baird explained, “I had to simplify it: Here’s ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’, let’s give these pieces of the song a name… Finneas was like [mimes ‘Eureka!’ moment], and in a few months he formed a band. All I had to teach him was the basics, and he immediately got it — and the same with Billie.”
Even Stella McCartney, daughter of Paul McCartney, has acknowledged this connection. Speaking to i-D, she said, “I know that Billie is a huge, huge Beatles fan… I sense that when I listen to her work, and her brother’s writing. They have similar starting points [when it comes to] telling a story through the melody of music. There’s obviously a modernity to Billie’s work… But I think that there’s a lot of beauty in the arrangements of her music, the harmonizing and the structure, that’s heavily influenced by The Beatles’ writing and work. [She has] a strong message of identity and staying true to yourself, never compromising. That’s something The Beatles did too.”
The enduring appeal of The Beatles lies not only in their timeless songwriting but in their bold non-conformity—a legacy that continues to inspire artists like Billie Eilish. As she introduces a new generation to their music, it’s clear that the fascination with the ‘Fab Four’ is far from fading. Through her modern lens, Billie Eilish keeps the spirit of The Beatles alive, proving that great music—and great messages—transcend time.
