In a candid interview re-aired on 60 Minutes, acclaimed Irish actor Cillian Murphy revealed the daring decision behind his starring role in Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic Oppenheimer. Murphy admitted that he committed to the project before even reading the script—a bold move that could have jeopardized his career but ultimately paid off.

Murphy, who plays the controversial physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, shared that his trust in Nolan’s vision and filmmaking prowess was the decisive factor. “I do honestly think it was one of the best screenplays I’ve ever read,” Murphy told interviewer Scott Pelley. “But I had already said yes before reading it.”

When pressed on why he would accept a role sight unseen, Murphy smiled confidently. “It’s always paid off for me on every film I’ve worked with [Nolan] on,” he explained, referencing their past collaborations including Inception, Dunkirk, and the Dark Knight trilogy.

Taking on the role of Oppenheimer presented perhaps the biggest challenge of Murphy’s career. The film is a sprawling historical drama centered on the physicist behind the atomic bomb—an intensely complex and morally fraught character. Yet Murphy embraced the risk, describing the opportunity as one that actors rarely get. “You just go all in,” he said.

Oppenheimer has since been hailed as one of the most ambitious and thought-provoking films of the decade, sparking global conversations about war, science, and ethics. Critics lauded Murphy’s portrayal as transformative and haunting, solidifying his reputation as one of the most compelling actors of his generation.

Reflecting on his leap of faith, Murphy acknowledged the stakes were high. “Of course I knew it was a risk,” he admitted. “But if you’re not taking risks, you’re not doing anything interesting. That’s what acting should be.”

He credited intense emotional and intellectual preparation for enabling him to fully inhabit the complex character, saying, “You have to commit completely. And with Chris, you know the material will always be there to support you.”

Murphy’s instinct proved sound. In 2024, he won the Oscar for Best Actor for his iconic performance, cementing Oppenheimer as a career-defining triumph born from a bold act of trust and artistic courage.
