Anna Kendrick on Spirituality: From “Christian-Light” Upbringing to Personal Exploration

OPINION: This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Anna Kendrick’s journey with spirituality and religion has been a deeply personal and evolving one. Raised in Portland, Maine, Kendrick described her childhood religious environment as “Protestant, boring, middle-of-the-road, Christian-light.” Though she embraced religion more earnestly in her youth, around the ages of 14 or 15, she began to question her beliefs—an uncomfortable but formative period as she grappled with her identity and faith. Ultimately, Kendrick moved away from organized religion and now identifies as non-religious.

In her 2016 memoir Scrappy Little Nobody, Kendrick reflected on her early “kind of blind faith” which she later challenged. Alongside her spiritual questioning, she candidly discussed her struggles with anxiety and the methods she developed to manage it.

More recently, Kendrick has shown openness to alternative spiritual practices. In a 2025 interview, she humorously shared that after participating in an ayahuasca ceremony, she felt like “the last year of my life is just gone,” hinting at a profound, transformative experience.

Further highlighting her spiritual curiosity, Kendrick took part in a 2024 podcast episode titled “It’s Body, Mind, AND Spirit,” where she joined a conversation with Pastor Sarah MacLeod about faith, healing, and spiritual authority. Although her specific role wasn’t detailed, her involvement signals an ongoing willingness to explore spiritual themes beyond traditional frameworks.

Anna Kendrick’s spiritual path illustrates a thoughtful transition from a conventional, structured upbringing to a more personal, nuanced exploration of faith and spirituality—one that embraces both skepticism and openness to new experiences.
