In the star-studded Apple TV+ series Shrinking, viewers are treated to the dynamic chemistry between Harrison Ford and Wendie Malick, who plays his love interest, Dr. Julie Baram. But long before they shared the screen as a happy couple, Malick came tantalizingly close to joining Ford in one of his most iconic roles—in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The catch? A hangover on the morning of her audition nearly derailed the opportunity.
In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly, Malick recalled the surreal experience of being summoned to audition for the then-upcoming Steven Spielberg and George Lucas adventure. “I get this call: Steven Spielberg, who I don’t think I knew who he was at that time, and this guy, George Lucas. They want you to come in to meet them. It was Valentine’s Day. I was wearing a red hoodie and red jeans with hearts all over the front and I didn’t know what I was going in there for,” she shared.
Excited and eager, Malick initially had a casual and friendly meeting with the legendary directors. But after receiving some script pages, she was asked to come back the following Monday to audition for the coveted role of Marion Ravenwood—the strong-willed heroine who would become Indiana Jones’s love interest.
However, the timing didn’t cooperate. Overcome by excitement, Malick admitted she “got completely snookered that night” celebrating what she thought was a sure thing. The next morning, she was suddenly called in to audition right away, unprepared and battling a hangover. “I was at my boyfriend’s house, I didn’t have the right clothes, I didn’t have anything, and I just really sucked at that thing,” she confessed.
Looking back, Malick acknowledged how much the role meant to her and how she believed she could have excelled in it. “When I saw the movie, I thought, ‘Oh, I would’ve killed in that.’” Despite the disappointment, she praised Karen Allen, who ultimately landed the part and became an enduring figure in the Indiana Jones saga, including the latest installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Now, years later, Malick gets to share scenes with Harrison Ford in Shrinking, a touching glimpse of what could have been a very different dynamic in one of cinema’s most beloved franchises. Though the Raiders role slipped away due to a rough morning, Malick’s story stands as a reminder that even near-misses can lead to rewarding opportunities—and that sometimes, timing and preparation are everything.
