In a candid interview, actor Tom Hardy opened up about the challenges of balancing his intense career with his family life, revealing how deeply his roles can affect him at home. Known for portraying iconic and often troubled characters, such as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Hardy admits that it’s not always easy to shake off the weight of his work once the cameras stop rolling.
Speaking with US ELLE, Hardy acknowledged the emotional toll his roles can take. “Some characters are nicer to have at home than others,” he shared. “Charlotte says it’s hard to shake it all out. There’s a decompression period back to civilian and family life. I’ve only just realized that, actually.” The 47-year-old actor explained that switching from character mode to family mode takes time and effort, and it’s something he has only recently become fully aware of.
Hardy, who is a father of three, emphasized the importance of being present for his children. He shares a son, Louis, with his ex-girlfriend Rachael Speed, and has two children with his wife, British actress Charlotte Riley. Reflecting on the pandemic-induced pause in his hectic schedule, Hardy admitted that the time spent at home with his family allowed him to realize just how deeply affected he can be by his roles.
“We’ve had six months with nothing to do but prep for the next project and be at home and be a family, and I realized how deeply affected I can be by a character, and how much work it takes to just be at home and be present,” he said. The actor added that appreciating family time and being fully engaged with his loved ones is a conscious effort that requires him to step back from the intensity of his career.
In 2018, Hardy and Riley made the decision to relocate their family from London to the more tranquil Surrey countryside. The move came after reports of an alleged stalker targeting the couple’s previous residence in Richmond, a property valued at £3.5 million. The actor later revealed that the rural move has been a positive change, providing a much-needed sense of peace and privacy.
Hardy further reflected on how the pandemic reshaped his outlook on life. He explained to Esquire, “I think there’s less reason to work, ultimately, because the life-drive is to be with the kids and to be fit and healthy and eat well and stuff. If you’ve got a roof over your head and a bed underneath you and food in the fridge, how much is enough? Because it’s not a dress rehearsal, life, is it? It’s going out live. This is one-time.”
This honest reflection underscores Hardy’s commitment to his family and his growing awareness of the importance of living in the moment. As he continues to navigate the complexities of his career and home life, Hardy’s approach to balancing both speaks to a deepening sense of self and family.
