Jason Momoa’s One Rule: The Role He’ll Never Take in a Movie

OPINION: This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Jason Momoa, known for his commanding presence and charismatic performances, has been offered many roles—but there’s one type of character he’s made clear he’ll never play: one where he’s “covered in makeup” and barely speaks.

Momoa revealed that he was once offered the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, a character famously known for heavy prosthetics and limited dialogue. However, he turned it down, saying, “I’ve done so many things where I don’t say much and I’m covered in makeup. I want to show a little more range.”

This decision underscores Momoa’s desire to embrace roles that let him express his full acting abilities and personality. Instead of becoming a Marvel antihero like Drax, he chose parts that showcase his versatility—from the titular Aquaman to the epic Dune, the action-packed Fast X, and even the animated Minecraft movie.

Momoa’s stance highlights the importance he places on roles that allow him to truly be himself and demonstrate depth, proving that for him, acting is about more than just the visual spectacle—it’s about connection and range.
