Tom Hiddleston Recalls Hilariously Awkward Fan Encounter: “Am I Supposed to Know Who You Are?!”

Tom Hiddleston, best known for his iconic role as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is undeniably a global star. Yet, as the actor recently revealed, not everyone instantly recognizes the God of Mischief—sometimes leading to some pretty awkward, and amusing, moments.
On Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hiddleston shared a memorable encounter from a flight he took on his way to start work on the film Everest. A flight attendant approached him with admiration, expressing how much he appreciated Hiddleston’s work. The actor recalled the attendant as “sweet,” grateful for the recognition.
However, the real highlight came from a fellow passenger—a drunk man sitting across the aisle—who interrupted with a blunt question: “Am I supposed to know who you are?” Apparently unaware of Hiddleston’s MCU fame and numerous other roles, the man was skeptical. When Hiddleston told him he wasn’t a rock star, the man refused to let go of the idea.
“He looked at me like he was convinced I was a rock star but just wasn’t telling him,” Hiddleston laughed. “At the end of the flight, he said, ‘I bet you’re a rock star and you’re not telling me. I’ll find out.’” The actor simply nodded and said, “Okay,” marking the end of a five-hour-long comedic exchange.
Hiddleston took the whole experience in stride, even calling the drunk man’s opening line a “good opener.” Given his worldwide recognition, it’s a funny reminder that fame doesn’t always travel as far as one might think—especially when a little alcohol is involved.
Fans of the actor can look forward to seeing him reprise his role as Loki in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, set for release on December 18, 2026. The film promises to be packed, featuring not only Loki but also the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, the X-Men, and Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth). Speculation is rife about whether the mischievous Loki and his brother Thor will share a bittersweet reunion.
While Hiddleston remains tight-lipped about the plot, he expressed excitement about the character’s journey. “I still feel it’s an extraordinary privilege to still be on the team and that there’s more stories to tell,” he said. “I feel like the character has grown as I’ve grown, and it’s genuinely an honor to still be in the squad.”
As for that drunk passenger on the flight—if he hasn’t caught on by now, Avengers: Doomsday will surely make it clear who Tom Hiddleston really is.
