Reflecting on the encounter during a March 26 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Hemsworth candidly revealed why he thinks their friendship might never take off.
“I got a photograph with Billie Eilish at the Oscars,” Hemsworth recalled. “I remember thinking, ‘Ah, don’t do it, don’t do it.’” Despite his hesitation, the 41-year-old actor, who shares three children with wife Elsa Pataky, pushed forward, motivated by the thought, “No, my kids are going to love this.” But the moment the selfie was snapped, he realized he’d shifted from being a work colleague to just a fan. “We will never be friends, never be best friends,” he joked.
This cringe-worthy Oscars moment isn’t Hemsworth’s only confessed selfie faux pas. At the 2023 Met Gala, which he and Elsa co-chaired, Hemsworth admitted to snapping “heaps of selfies,” despite the event’s notoriously strict no-phone rules. “Selfies everywhere,” he told E! News. “A lot of selfies in my phone. Like, ‘When did I take that? Let’s delete that one.’”
Hemsworth explained that attending such events remains exciting for him and Elsa, who live in Australia and are less jaded by Hollywood’s award show culture. “It’s still new and exciting,” he said. “This in particular had an eclectic group of people, different than the normal crowd of, you know, film award shows we’ve been doing… sports people, musicians, artists, so we had a really fun night.”
