In a dazzling display of Hollywood glamour and community spirit, almost 200 Marilyn Monroe lookalikes donned retro swimsuits and iconic blonde wigs to participate in a themed charity swim at Balcarrick Beach in Donabate, County Dublin. The event, known as Marilyn’s Mater Paddle, took place on Sunday and marked its second year of raising vital funds for women’s cancer care at Dublin’s Mater Hospital.
The swimmers’ playful tribute to the legendary film star was more than just a splash of fun—it was a heartfelt effort to support life-saving initiatives at the hospital. Proceeds from the swim help accelerate cancer diagnosis, improve treatments, and ensure world-class care for women across Ireland.

Roisin Duffy, Director of Development at the Mater Foundation, highlighted the importance of the event, explaining that the foundation’s work spans four critical areas: purchasing life-saving equipment, hospital redevelopment, advancing research and innovation, and providing support for patients and their families. “This can mean everything from essential items like IV drips and Dyson fans for cancer patients to cutting-edge mammogram machines,” she said.
Duffy expressed deep gratitude for the participants, calling them a “sisterhood of Marilyns” whose spirited presence underscores the event’s powerful mission. “Marilyn’s Mater Paddle may seem on the surface like just a fun, Hollywood-themed dip but it’s so much more. It’s a paddle with a purpose, and every splash and every donation made is helping us support women on their cancer journey in the Mater Hospital.”

The event not only raised awareness but also united the community in a striking visual testament to solidarity and hope, proving that even a playful homage to a Hollywood icon can carry profound meaning and impact for those fighting cancer.
