Harrison Ford to Receive Operation Smile Award Honoring Late Friend Dr. Randy Sherman, Urges Others to Give More

Hollywood icon Harrison Ford is set to receive the prestigious Dr. Randy Sherman Visionary Award from global surgery nonprofit Operation Smile this Tuesday night. While Ford’s philanthropic efforts are widely recognized, he emphasizes that the true focus should be on the award’s namesake—his late friend and humanitarian, Dr. Randy Sherman.

Sherman, who served as director of the Cedars-Sinai Division of Plastic Surgery in Los Angeles, was renowned for his pioneering work in reconstructive surgery and developing training programs worldwide. A skilled pilot like Ford, the two bonded over their shared home airport. Sherman introduced Ford to his volunteer work with Operation Smile, which provides life-changing cleft palate surgeries in underserved countries, and Angel Flight West, offering free medical transport to patients in need.

Reflecting on Sherman’s impact, Ford said, “The things that he contributed to my life and to my family’s lives are beyond anybody’s wildest imagination. He was a very important person to me and, by the way, to all of the people that he’s associated with in the medical community. All of them recognize his selfless service.” Tragically, Sherman passed away in 2023 after his plane experienced engine failure and crashed in New Mexico.

Dr. Billy Magee, Operation Smile’s chief medical officer, praised both men, noting Sherman’s leadership in cleft palate care and his role in expanding surgical access even in the most remote regions. Magee said, “This award celebrates the spirit of compassion and dedication that both Harrison and Dr. Sherman embody. I can’t think of a more deserving recipient to carry that legacy forward.” Magee also recently announced Operation 100, an initiative to equip 100 cleft surgery teams in 100 hospitals worldwide.

In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Ford shared his hope that receiving the award will inspire others to contribute what they can to causes that transform lives. He humbly directs attention to Sherman’s legacy, encouraging a spirit of generosity and service that benefits communities around the globe.
