Tom Hiddleston Reflects on Mortality in Lead Role of Stephen King’s ‘The Life of Chuck’

Tom Hiddleston, famed for making audiences cheer for the mischievous Loki Odinson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is taking on a profoundly different role that has prompted him to confront the delicate topic of mortality. In The Life of Chuck, a film based on a novella by horror master Stephen King, Hiddleston stars as Charles “Chuck” Krantz, a mortal man whose life story unfolds in reverse—from adulthood back to childhood.

Known for his charm and complex portrayals, Hiddleston shared in a recent interview with MovieWeb how deeply connected he felt to the character of Chuck. “I never know how my work resonates with the audience,” he said, “but this particular mortal… was one I just was so honored to play. It really resonated with me immediately and instinctively when I read it. I just felt very connected to him, and it may be to do with the passing of time for me.”

The actor’s reflection on mortality takes on added poignancy given his iconic role as Loki, an immortal trickster god who defies death repeatedly. Hiddleston wryly acknowledged, “Obviously, Loki is not mortal. I think, in fact, he would be offended by the question.”

The Life of Chuck presents a meditation on life, time, and the extraordinary nature of ordinary existence. Hiddleston described one scene that stood out to him—a dance symbolizing a pivotal transition in Chuck’s life, capturing a moment of freedom and spontaneity before the physical and mental decline he does not yet realize. “That moment may never be repeated,” Hiddleston reflected. “Every ordinary life is not ordinary at all. It’s actually extraordinary, if we had the curiosity to learn.”

The film features an impressive cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mia Sara, Matthew Lillard, and Mark Hamill. It premiered to acclaim at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, winning the People’s Choice Award. The Life of Chuck is set for a nationwide theatrical release on June 13.

With this thoughtful, moving role, Hiddleston invites audiences to explore mortality and meaning beyond the spectacle, revealing a new depth to an actor already beloved for his versatility and emotional honesty.
