How Selling Candy and Bagging Groceries Shaped Snoop Dogg’s Hustle Mentality

Before Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. became global hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg, he was a hardworking kid in Long Beach, California, doing everything he could to help support his family. Long before platinum records and Super Bowl halftime shows, the young Snoop sold candy door-to-door, delivered newspapers, and bagged groceries—jobs that not only kept his household afloat but also laid the foundation for a work ethic that would define his success in music, entertainment, and business.

Growing up in a community plagued by gang violence, Snoop faced plenty of distractions. He became involved with the Rollin’ 20s Crips, a notorious Long Beach gang, and had frequent run-ins with the law. Yet, even amid these challenges, he pursued honest work wherever he could find it. According to VH1 and Wikipedia, his first job came through a summer youth employment program, where he sold candy bars door-to-door. He credits that experience with teaching him how to think like a businessman—something that would serve him well later in life.

“Selling candy gave me a business mentality early,” Snoop shared in a VH1 bonus clip from Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. “I had to knock on doors, talk to people, and learn how to get told ‘no’ and keep going.”

In addition to candy sales, Snoop also took on early morning newspaper delivery routes and bagged groceries at local stores—modest jobs that taught him responsibility and discipline. These seemingly ordinary roles played an extraordinary part in shaping a young man determined to rise above his circumstances.

Today, that same hustle is evident in every facet of Snoop’s empire. Beyond selling more than 35 million albums worldwide, he’s launched ventures in cannabis, gaming, youth sports, and television. His ability to diversify and reinvent himself has made him one of the most enduring and versatile figures in pop culture. The lessons from his childhood jobs—resilience, customer engagement, and perseverance—are embedded in every business deal he strikes.

While Snoop’s story is often framed by his musical legacy and larger-than-life persona, his early jobs remind us that success is rarely built overnight. Sometimes, it begins with a bag of candy and the courage to knock on a stranger’s door.
