Inside the “Loki Lectures”: How Tom Hiddleston Helped Owen Wilson Unlock the MCU

When Owen Wilson stepped into the role of Mobius M. Mobius for Marvel’s Loki series on Disney+, he wasn’t just joining a new show—he was diving headfirst into a labyrinthine cinematic universe spanning more than a decade. To help him navigate it all, Tom Hiddleston did something extraordinary: he became a professor of sorts, offering Wilson what would come to be known as the now-legendary “Loki Lectures.”

For Wilson, whose past roles largely steered clear of the superhero genre, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was unfamiliar territory. But as Mobius—an agent of the Time Variance Authority charged with understanding and managing Loki’s timeline chaos—his character needed to know Loki as well as the audience did. Enter Hiddleston.

Over the course of several days, Hiddleston meticulously walked Wilson through Loki’s complex arc—from the mischievous trickster’s debut in Thor to his apparent redemption and death in Avengers: Infinity War, to his unexpected time-hopping return in Avengers: Endgame. According to Wilson, the experience felt like “a community college course on Loki,” filled with clips, character breakdowns, and rich Marvel lore.

One moment that captured the intensity of Hiddleston’s commitment came late one evening, when he reportedly knocked on Wilson’s hotel door near midnight, asking for his “Loki notebook”—evidence that the lessons were as immersive as they were informal. Director Kate Herron described the sessions as feeling more like a “Cambridge lecture,” complete with seated audiences and video presentations. It wasn’t just a bonding moment for Hiddleston and Wilson—it set the tone for the cast and crew’s unified understanding of the MCU’s narrative complexity.

The effort paid off. Wilson, whose character interviews Loki in several pivotal scenes, credited the lectures for grounding their on-screen chemistry in real understanding. He later reflected on Jimmy Kimmel Live that the sessions “were really important and really helpful to our dynamic once we started filming.”

Even elements of Hiddleston’s interpretation of Loki—like the symbolism of the character wearing his golden horns when feeling powerful—made their way into Wilson’s portrayal and into the show’s subtle details.

By the time Loki premiered on June 9, 2021, with Wilson co-starring alongside Hiddleston and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the foundation had been laid for one of the MCU’s most intelligent and emotionally layered character pairings. And at the heart of it all was a crash course in chaos, delivered by the God of Mischief himself.
