Rosamund Pike Recalls “Traumatic” James Bond Audition: “I Stood My Ground”

Before Rosamund Pike was an Academy Award nominee and one of Hollywood’s most commanding screen presences, she was a 21-year-old newcomer navigating the stark realities of the entertainment industry—starting with an uncomfortable audition for the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day.

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Pike opened up about what she described as a “traumatic” experience during her audition for the role of Miranda Frost. The audition, meant to determine if she would play a Bond girl alongside Pierce Brosnan, took a disturbing turn when she was asked to disrobe. “In the Bond audition, I was asked to unzip and drop the dress I was wearing, to just stand there in underwear,” Pike recalled. “And I thought, ‘Well, no, I’ll be doing that if I get the part. I won’t be doing that now.’”

Her refusal didn’t cost her the role—in fact, it became her Hollywood breakthrough. Pike was ultimately cast as Miranda Frost, an undercover MI6 agent turned traitor, facing off against Halle Berry’s iconic character, Jinx Johnson. But the memory of that audition stayed with her, highlighting what many actresses have described as a culture of pressure and objectification in high-profile casting rooms.

“I’d never been to America until I went with Bond,” Pike added. “Doing the press tour was mind-blowing, a magic-carpet ride.” Still, the path to stardom was anything but magical in its early steps.

Her fortitude in that moment marked the beginning of a career built on powerful, complex roles—from her chilling portrayal of Amy Dunne in Gone Girl, which earned her an Oscar nomination, to her recent role in Saltburn as an aristocratic yet emotionally layered mother. Pike also took home an Emmy for her performance in State of the Union, solidifying her status as one of the most versatile actresses of her generation.

Meanwhile, the James Bond franchise itself continues to evolve, with discussions about its future direction gaining momentum. Halle Berry, Pike’s Die Another Day co-star, recently spoke at the Cannes Film Festival about the possibility of casting a female Bond and the long-rumored spin-off centered on her character, Jinx.

“I don’t know if 007 should be a woman,” Berry said. “In 2025, it’s nice to say, ‘Oh, she should be a woman.’ But I don’t really know if I think that’s the right thing to do.” On the topic of a Jinx spin-off, Berry offered a wistful reflection: “There was a time that that could have happened. Probably should have happened. I would have loved for that to happen. But I think that time has passed.”

As for Pike, her Bond girl beginnings remain a paradox—her big break intertwined with a deeply uneasy moment. But by standing her ground in that audition room, she did more than land a part—she set a tone for the integrity that would define her career.
