It’s official: Voltron, the highly anticipated live-action remake of the beloved 1980s animated series, has completed filming—bringing fans one step closer to witnessing a modern reimagining of the cult sci-fi phenomenon. With Henry Cavill at the helm, the project has been generating buzz since it was first announced in late 2024.
Producer Bob Koplar broke the news in an Instagram post on May 24, stating, “Our live-action Voltron film has officially wrapped production, and we’re THRILLED with how it all went. I’ve been with this franchise for years and can proudly say that this WILL be the Voltron experience our fans have been dreaming of.”
Koplar also teased forthcoming announcements, assuring fans that launch plans are in the works: “There’s been some chatter out there about the plans for the film’s launch, and we’d like to assure you—when official plans are set, you’ll be the first to hear it right here. Stay with us! I promise it’ll be worth the wait!”
With Cavill—best known for his iconic turn as Superman—leading the charge, and Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber at the helm, expectations are sky-high. The star-studded cast also includes This Is Us actor Sterling K. Brown and global pop icon Rita Ora, who joined the project just before principal photography kicked off in December 2024.
Though plot details remain tightly guarded, Thurber previously gave fans a glimpse into the creative vision during a video appearance at VoltCon last October. “We’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots,” he said. “We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world, but we’re going to stay true to those iconic elements that you love—that I love.”
The original Voltron: Defender of the Universe series, which debuted in 1984, became a pop culture staple with its unique blend of giant robot action, space adventure, and camaraderie among a team of diverse pilots. With this remake, the filmmakers aim to recapture that nostalgic magic while updating the saga for a new generation.
A release date has yet to be announced, but with filming wrapped and fan anticipation building, the countdown to Voltron’s long-awaited return has officially begun.
