Inside Jennifer Lawrence’s Near-Death Experience—What Happened When Her Private Jet Turned Into a Nightmare

On June 11, 2017, Jennifer Lawrence boarded a private jet from Louisville, Kentucky, headed for New York City. What should have been a routine flight home turned into a brush with death when both engines of her plane failed mid-air, forcing an emergency landing that left her physically unscathed but emotionally transformed.

Cruising at 31,000 feet aboard a small private jet—reported variously as a Beechjet 400 or Hawker Beechcraft B40—the first engine failed unexpectedly. Panic set in. As the pilots attempted an emergency descent toward Buffalo Niagara International Airport, the unthinkable happened: the second engine also failed. Lawrence, her dog Pippi on her lap, felt helpless as the aircraft dipped and jerked violently. “My skeleton was all that was left in the seat,” she later recalled in a candid 2021 Vanity Fair interview.

Believing she was going to die, Lawrence began composing what she called “mental voicemails” to her family. “I’ve had a great life. I’m sorry,” she whispered in her mind, not for herself—but for those she’d leave behind. “Everybody was going to be so bummed,” she said, reflecting the guilt and grief that overwhelmed her more than fear itself.

Rescue crews were already on alert as the plane hit the runway hard, bounced, and slammed again before skidding to a stop. Emergency teams had to force open the door to get the shaken passengers out. Though she survived, the psychological scars ran deep. “It made me a lot weaker,” she confessed, adding that she still finds flying “horrific,” even though her career demands it.

To calm her nerves post-landing, she was handed a large tranquilizer and several mini bottles of rum—before being ushered onto another flight to finish her journey. Humor, even in trauma, stayed close: in the middle of her airborne prayers, she pleaded, “Please, Lord Jesus, let me keep my hair. Wrap me in your hair-loving arms.”

Jennifer Lawrence’s near-death experience was more than just a frightening travel tale. It offered her—and the world—a sobering reminder of life’s fragility. For a woman used to commanding movie sets and red carpets, it was a moment of raw vulnerability. A moment that made her, in her words, “see everything differently.”
