Michael J. Fox’s New Role Could Mirror Real Life—And Harrison Ford Says That’s No Coincidence

In a heartening moment for fans and colleagues alike, Michael J. Fox is making a long-anticipated return to television with a role in Apple TV+’s Shrinking—and no one is more excited than his future co-star, Harrison Ford.
Fox, who largely stepped back from acting due to his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease, announced last year that he was open to returning to the screen under the right circumstances. That moment has arrived, and it’s in the form of Shrinking, the hit comedy-drama created by Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, and Jason Segel.
While details of Fox’s role remain under wraps, Ford, who plays the acerbic therapist Paul Rhodes on the show, offered heartfelt praise for the Back to the Future star in a recent interview with People. “His willingness to be part of our show is a great source of inspiration and gives us a real purpose,” Ford said. “It’s not just us coming together, two actors. There’s a story to tell, and our commitment to the story is what joins us together.”
The story, indeed, may hit close to home for both actors. In Shrinking, Ford’s character is in a stage of Parkinson’s disease that has been progressing throughout the series. With Fox’s well-documented personal experience, many speculate that his character may intersect directly with Paul’s journey, creating a powerful and authentic portrayal of the disease’s emotional and physical toll.
Ford emphasized the importance of approaching the subject matter with both respect and realism. “When we were together, it was an accomplishment of all of us trying to meet all the ambitions, both obvious and attendant, to the ideas we’re trying to deal with,” he explained. “I’ve done what I could to acquaint myself with the aspects of the disease that I’m portraying, and I’m at a much different stage of the disease.”
Fox’s return to a major television role marks his most significant screen appearance in over a decade. While he’s made notable guest spots—including Emmy-nominated turns on The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm—his acting has understandably taken a back seat as he’s focused on advocacy through The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
With Shrinking already earning critical acclaim for its unique blend of humor and humanity, the addition of Fox could inject both gravitas and emotional resonance into the upcoming season. It also opens the door for long-overdue recognition from awards bodies, many of which have previously honored Fox for his work in Spin City, Family Ties, and Rescue Me.
More than anything, though, Fox’s participation sends a clear message: his story isn’t over, and neither is his impact on the screen. As Harrison Ford put it, “I appreciate his willingness to be a part of the show.” So does the rest of the world.
