Nearly 200 swimmers dressed as the iconic Marilyn Monroe made waves this weekend—not on a Hollywood set, but at Balcarrick Beach in Donabate, County Dublin. Sporting retro swimsuits and signature blonde wigs, these “Marilyns” took part in the second annual Marilyn’s Mater Paddle, a themed charity swim with a heartfelt mission.
The event aimed to raise funds for women’s cancer care at Dublin’s Mater Hospital, supporting efforts to accelerate cancer diagnosis, improve treatment options, and provide top-tier care to women across Ireland.

Roisin Duffy, director of development at the hospital’s foundation, highlighted the impact of the fundraiser: “Our foundation focuses on life-saving equipment, hospital redevelopment, research and innovation, and patient and family support. From vital IV drips and Dyson fans for cancer patients to cutting-edge mammogram machines, every donation makes a difference.”
Reflecting on the event’s spirit, Duffy said, “We are incredibly humbled by the sisterhood of Marilyns who gathered in Donabate this morning for women’s cancer care. Marilyn’s Mater Paddle may seem on the surface like just a fun, Hollywood-themed dip but it’s so much more. It’s a paddle with a purpose, and every splash and every donation made is helping us support women on their cancer journey in the Mater Hospital.”

What began as a playful homage to a Hollywood legend turned into a powerful show of solidarity and hope, proving that even the smallest splash can make a monumental impact in the fight against cancer.
