‘It’s in My DNA’—Rumer Willis Passes Down the Willis-Moore Legacy in the Most Unexpected Way

Rumer Willis has always been a proud inheritor of what she affectionately calls her “kooky Hollywood legacy.” The 36-year-old actress and entrepreneur grew up immersed in showbiz, the daughter of action icon Bruce Willis and actress Demi Moore. Now, as a mom herself, she’s passing down the family tradition—by bringing her two-year-old daughter, Louetta, to movie sets.

Reflecting on her own childhood, Rumer recalls a vivid behind-the-scenes moment from a Die Hard film: “His face is covered in blood and I’m about to give him a smooch,” she laughs about her father, Bruce. “He’s just covered in blood and I’m not afraid.” For the Willis clan, fake blood and film chaos have always been part of family life.

That legacy has come full circle. While filming her new Civil War-era action drama, Trail of Vengeance, Rumer’s daughter Louetta joined her on set—unfazed by the sight of her mother covered in theatrical gore. “She showed up to set and she’s like, ‘Hi, Mommy,’” Rumer shares. “It didn’t scare her. I was like, ‘Man, I really know that you’re a Willis girl.’” It was a clear echo of Rumer’s own experiences growing up in Hollywood’s orbit.

Trail of Vengeance marks Rumer’s return to film since becoming a mother, and she’s embraced a new rhythm: Louetta goes everywhere with her. Rumer, who co-parents Louetta with her ex-boyfriend Derek Richard Thomas, says, “That practice is in my DNA, because I grew up this way.” She’s eager for Louetta to explore film sets, travel, and meet people from different cultures and backgrounds—just as Rumer did as a child.

The experience of working on Trail of Vengeance hit especially close to home. In the film, Rumer plays Katherine, a widow and expectant mother fighting for justice in 1875. As Rumer navigated her own transition from partnership to single motherhood in 2024, she found parallels between her real life and her character’s journey. “How am I going to figure this out?” she wondered, just like Katherine. Both women, fictional and real, had to find their footing after loss.

“It really gave me that sense of, I’m going to stand on my own two feet and I’m going to take charge of my life,” Rumer says. Embodying Katherine—a woman forced to fight back and forge her own destiny—was cathartic, even if “in one of those scenarios she’s going to go kill some people!” The role, she adds, became a way to process and discover her own strength as a single mom.

Motherhood, Rumer says, has profoundly changed her—deepening her emotional range as an actress and a person. “It’s totally pushed the boundaries for me of the depth of love that I could experience,” she explains. “It’s shifted everything—my self-love, my confidence, how I relate to myself and my own capabilities.”

Directed by Johnny Remo and co-written with Daniel Backman, Trail of Vengeance also stars Gbenga Akinnagbe, Jeff Fahey, Eric Nelson, and Graham Greene. The film is now in select theaters and available on VOD, carrying forward both the Willis family legacy—and a new generation’s fearless spirit.
