“It Broke Me” – Tom Holland’s Darkest Role Forced Him to Quit Acting for a Year

Tom Holland, best known to global audiences as Marvel’s high-flying Spider-Man, stunned fans and industry insiders alike with his raw, vulnerable performance as Danny Sullivan in the 2023 Apple TV+ psychological drama The Crowded Room. But behind the scenes, the transformation came at a cost Holland never expected—and ultimately led him to take a year-long break from acting to recover.

The Crowded Room, inspired by the true story of Billy Milligan, centers on Danny Sullivan, a young man living with dissociative identity disorder who is arrested for a shooting in late-1970s New York. The show, co-executive produced by Holland himself, challenged the actor to delve into an emotional and mental landscape far darker than any he’d previously portrayed.

In interviews following the series’ release, Holland opened up about the toll the role took on him. “We were exploring certain emotions that I have definitely never experienced before,” he confessed to Extra on June 6, 2023. The immersion into Danny’s fractured psyche left Holland emotionally spent, leading to physical side effects such as weight loss and a feeling of being “gone, tired, and emotionally drained.” As he explained, “The show did break me.”

The emotional strain became too much to ignore. After wrapping production, Holland announced that he was stepping away from acting for a full year. “There did come a time where I was sort of, ‘I need to have a break,’” he told Extra. He described needing to “disappear” for a while, escaping to Mexico for a week of solitude and reflection—a sharp contrast to his usual whirlwind of red carpets and superhero stunts.

Holland’s hiatus began in mid-2023, right as The Crowded Room started streaming. During this period, he went off the radar, focusing on his own mental health and well-being—a decision that resonated with fans who admired his candor about mental health struggles.

The break proved restorative. By May 2024, Holland was back on stage, starring as Romeo in Jamie Lloyd’s innovative West End production of Romeo and Juliet. The twelve-week run marked his triumphant return to the craft he loves—this time, with renewed perspective and resilience.

Despite the series itself receiving mixed reviews, Holland’s performance did not go unnoticed. In early 2024, he was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries, a nod to the depth and intensity he brought to the challenging role.

Tom Holland’s journey with The Crowded Room is more than just a story of artistic risk—it’s a testament to the human cost of powerful storytelling, and to the strength it takes to step away, heal, and return stronger. For Holland, the year that “broke” him may have been the very thing that built him back up.
