Deadpool Nearly Took Down Mickey Mouse—The Disney Rule That Changed Everything!

When Deadpool & Wolverine burst into theaters last summer, it didn’t just break records—it rewrote the rules for what a Marvel movie could get away with under the Disney banner. But as Ryan Reynolds recently revealed, not even the Merc with a Mouth was allowed to cross every line. In a candid conversation on the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast, Reynolds gave fans a rare peek behind the curtain, sharing the two absolute “no-go” areas laid down by Disney—and the specific risqué Mickey Mouse joke that even Bob Iger wouldn’t let slide.

Reynolds, who both stars in and co-wrote the R-rated blockbuster, recounted the moment Disney CEO Bob Iger personally intervened. “The first time he saw the film, it was in pretty good shape,” Reynolds said. “And he said, ‘You got to remove the one line, right?’ And I was like, ‘What line?’ ‘You know the line.’ And I went, ‘Mickey Mouse?’ He was like, ‘yeah.’” For Reynolds, this was no throwaway gag—it was, he joked, “the thrust, the thesis” of Deadpool’s irreverent spirit. But Iger was adamant: Mickey was off-limits. The axed line, now legendary thanks to leaked “For Your Consideration” scripts, had Deadpool exclaiming, “F–k! What, we can’t even afford one more X-Man? Disney is so cheap. I can barely breathe with all this Mickey Mouse c–k in my throat,” after learning Magneto wouldn’t cameo.

But the mouse wasn’t the only sacred Disney icon. Reynolds also revealed an earlier pitch: a movie where Deadpool would hunt down the hunter who killed Bambi’s mom. That idea, too, was shot down. “We don’t touch Bambi and we don’t touch Mickey Mouse,” Disney’s top brass declared. Reynolds said, “This is after they said no to 18 different things.”

Despite these restrictions, Deadpool & Wolverine wasn’t creatively neutered. The film tore into the box office with a staggering $211 million domestic opening and raked in $1.338 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. Fans and critics alike cheered, rewarding it with an “A” CinemaScore and solidifying Deadpool’s place in the MCU. As Reynolds quipped, “I will land the f**king plane on a dime. It will be a four-quadrant R-rated film. I’m going to make Disney’s first four-quadrant R-rated film.”

What’s next for Deadpool? While no sequel or standalone Deadpool 4 has been officially announced, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased that the studio is always looking for ways to use the character, and Reynolds himself is already writing another project. But don’t expect Deadpool to join the Avengers or X-Men any time soon: “If he becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that,” Reynolds insisted.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now streaming on Disney+ and available on digital platforms, ensuring Deadpool’s outrageous antics keep finding new fans—even if Mickey and Bambi remain untouchable.

Now, with the most notorious Disney joke off-limits, fans are left wondering: what’s the wildest Disney dig you wish Deadpool could have gotten away with? Let the debate begin.
