After five seasons of action, suspense, and groundbreaking television, CBS’s The Equalizer has officially reached the end of its run, leaving fans and cast members searching for answers—and closure. At the heart of this conversation is Queen Latifah, the trailblazing star and executive producer who brought Robyn McCall to life in a reboot that shattered expectations and drew millions of viewers.

In a candid new interview with Us Weekly, Queen Latifah, 55, opened up about the uncertainty surrounding the show’s future following its sudden cancellation earlier this month. “It is a little out of my hands in terms of what happens with it from this point forward,” Latifah admitted, making it clear that even a Hollywood heavyweight sometimes has to watch from the sidelines. Still, she expressed nothing but gratitude for the experience: “I do appreciate what we were able to do and we made some good TV.”

Latifah’s words reveal just how much the series came to mean to her—both personally and professionally. “It occurred to me that it has been such a big part of my life for the last — more than — five years actually. I’m thankful. I’m very grateful. I’m in a very grateful place. I’m grateful to the fans of the show for sticking with it,” she shared, reflecting on the community that grew up around the series.

She was quick to thank CBS for giving the show a platform and highlighted the bonds formed with the “wonderful cast” and the “amazing crew, writers, showrunners and everybody involved in it.” According to Latifah, the people behind The Equalizer became her “family”—a sentiment echoed by many who have followed her journey as Robyn McCall.

A reboot of the 1985 series starring Edward Woodward, The Equalizer starred Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira, Laya DeLeon Hayes, and Lorraine Toussaint alongside Latifah. The show debuted with a bang, premiering after the 2021 Super Bowl to over 20 million live viewers—a testament to both its cultural relevance and Queen Latifah’s star power. Over the years, the show collected several award nominations, including from BET, NAACP Image Awards, People’s Choice, and Critics’ Choice, marking its place in TV history.

Despite its strong start, declining ratings and financial concerns led CBS to pull the plug just days before the Season 5 finale. Not even Latifah’s willingness to accept concessions in hopes of securing a final 13-episode sixth season could save the series. CBS also axed a planned spinoff featuring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz, compounding the disappointment for the show’s creative team and loyal viewers.

Latifah responded to the cancellation on Instagram, describing her “kick-ass role” as Robyn McCall as “everything I hope it would be.” She reflected, “The Equalizer blew past every dream we had for it, and having the opportunity to do this for five seasons honestly feels surreal.” She reserved special thanks for the show’s “loyal” and “ride-or-die” fans: “That’s exactly why we keep doing this. We can’t thank you enough. It means the world to us.”

While the fate of The Equalizerincluding any chance of a revival on another network—remains uncertain, Queen Latifah’s gratitude and pride are clear. The series may have ended, but its impact—and the bonds it created—will endure far beyond its final episode.
