Tom Cruise’s Underwater ‘Final Reckoning’ Stunt Took Years to Develop — And It Nearly Broke Him!

Tom Cruise is no stranger to risk, but his latest revelations about filming “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” prove that even Hollywood’s boldest daredevil can face daunting limits. In a candid appearance on The Tonight Show, Cruise offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look at one of the most grueling sequences in his storied career: an extended underwater infiltration of a submarine—one that pushed his endurance and ingenuity to the brink.

It’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever done,” Cruise told host Jimmy Fallon, recounting how the intense lighting used to capture the scene left him almost entirely blind beneath the surface. “A lot of times I cannot see because of the reflection of the light,” Cruise explained. “So, I would go in kind of blind, spend a lot of time on the set figuring out [the movement] as we’re figuring out the shots. Then, when I’m doing it, I have a hard time.”

The obstacles didn’t end with compromised vision. Cruise performed the sequence while encased in a custom diving suit that, once soaked, ballooned to a staggering 125 pounds. “Plus the suit, when it’s wet, increases in weight by about 125 pounds. So, the kind of workouts and things that I have to do just to prepare for these things, it’s years of development,” Cruise said. As both star and producer, the action legend faced the dual challenge of pushing himself physically while overseeing every creative detail.

The commitment to realism is nothing new for Cruise, but even by his standards, the “Final Reckoning” submarine scene required extreme adaptation. He revealed another layer of difficulty: the technical limits of his diving equipment. “I’m breathing in my own carbon dioxide,” Cruise admitted, explaining how the gear restricted fresh air. “It builds up in the body and affects the muscles. You have to overcome all of that while you’re doing it, and be present.”

This unwavering dedication—risking discomfort, disorientation, and physical strain—has become synonymous with Cruise’s approach to the Mission: Impossible franchise. Each film has raised the bar for practical stunts, and “The Final Reckoning” is no exception, setting a new standard for what’s possible in big-budget action cinema.

Behind every pulse-pounding frame is a performer who refuses to cut corners or rely solely on special effects. Instead, Cruise insists on living each moment—blind, weighed down, and gasping for breath—to deliver the authenticity fans have come to expect. It’s a philosophy that’s taken “years of development,” both in the gym and on set, and one that continues to cement Tom Cruise’s legacy as the action genre’s most fearless pioneer.
