Hollywood lost one of its iconic talents last month when Val Kilmer, known for his powerful presence and versatility, passed away due to complications from pneumonia. As tributes continue to pour in, Tom Cruise—the actor who shared the screen with Kilmer in two generations of Top Gun—has offered a heartfelt remembrance of their emotional reunion for Top Gun: Maverick.
Now 62, Cruise returned to his legendary role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell for the 2022 blockbuster sequel. For many fans, the film’s most poignant moment was the on-screen reunion of Maverick and his rival-turned-ally, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky—brought to life once again by Kilmer, who had faced his own health battles in recent years.
Speaking to Sight and Sound magazine, Cruise described the experience as “beautiful” and deeply meaningful. “To come back all those years later, and it was amazing being on set for Top Gun: Maverick because it was like time had not passed. We were laughing and it was joyous,” he recalled. The camaraderie between the two actors was palpable, echoing their bond from the original 1986 classic. “And then we started acting and it’s just, you see it… he became Iceman. The power that this guy has, even not saying anything, to become that character. You see how even the sniff that he gave. He was Iceman.”
For Cruise, the dynamic between Maverick and Iceman resonated on and off the screen, making their reunion even more special. “You saw the dynamic between these friends. It was very special, to say the least, for me personally.”
Cruise emphasized that Kilmer’s return was much more than a nostalgic nod. “I just tell people… you take Iceman from the first film and you look at it here, that whole journey, he became Iceman. And he didn’t even have to speak,” Cruise reflected. “That’s what he’s able to do. Beautiful, really beautiful. A gift that he had and that he shared with all of us.”
As fans remember Val Kilmer’s remarkable career and indelible impact on Hollywood, Tom Cruise’s tribute underscores not only the enduring magic of Top Gun, but also the genuine connection between two actors whose friendship left an unforgettable mark on film history.
