Jason Momoa Opens Up About the Role He’s Desperate to Erase from His Legacy – And Why

Jason Momoa, a towering figure in Hollywood known for his roles in Aquaman and Game of Thrones, has built an impressive career through diverse, intense, and iconic performances. But behind the rugged action hero, there lies a man who has struggled with a role he wishes to leave in the past—a role that, for him, feels more like an obstacle than a stepping stone.

It all began in 1999 when Jason landed his first major acting role in Baywatch: Hawaii. At just 19 years old, he was cast as Jason Ioane, a lifeguard who spent most of his time looking great on the beach. The show was a spinoff of the iconic Baywatch series, famous for its beachside drama and focus on physical appearance rather than depth. For many, this role would have been the start of a long career in light-hearted, beach-centric roles. But for Jason, it felt like a shadow he couldn’t shake off.

In an interview with the Australian radio show Fitzy & Wippa in 2021, Jason humorously dismissed his Baywatch role, even joking that he “never happened” in it. He made it clear that he did not want his children to watch it, suggesting a desire to distance himself from that early stage of his career. In a way, it was as if he was putting that chapter behind him, wanting his legacy to be defined by the powerful roles he later took on, such as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones and Arthur Curry in Aquaman.

Jason’s discomfort with Baywatch seems rooted in its focus on physicality and superficial appeal, elements that sharply contrast with his current, more serious and action-oriented image. His early days on the show—short hair, clean-shaven, and without his now-famous tattoos—present a version of himself that feels foreign when compared to the grizzled, tattooed warrior he became known for. He didn’t want to be remembered for the pretty boy lifeguard. Instead, he longed for roles that tapped into his depth as an actor, ones that were more challenging and offered him the chance to prove his versatility.

Interestingly, despite the challenges Baywatch presented, it wasn’t his portrayal of Khal Drogo that Jason would downplay. While the role did bring him fame, it also led to some frustrating career obstacles, particularly being typecast because of his intense portrayal of the Dothraki leader. In interviews, he’s spoken about how people mistakenly believed he couldn’t speak English due to his performance, which led to difficulties in landing other roles. But despite these frustrations, Jason has never expressed the desire to erase Khal Drogo from his legacy.

Khal Drogo was a turning point—a role that catapulted him into stardom and earned him critical recognition, despite the challenges it created. Jason embraced the role for what it was, even acknowledging that it marked a defining moment in his career. The same can’t be said about Baywatch. The actor’s attempts to keep that part of his past hidden from his children and his humorous disavowal of the role speak volumes about how much he wishes to be remembered for something else.

Jason Momoa’s journey is one of reinvention—a story of an actor transforming from a lifeguard on the beach to a beloved action hero. While Baywatch may have been the stepping stone that led him to greater fame, it’s clear that it’s not the role he wants to define him. Instead, he wants to be remembered for his more meaningful roles, ones that showcase his grit, depth, and versatility. And as he continues to take on powerful characters, his legacy will be shaped not by the role he’d rather forget, but by the powerful performances he’s given since.
