Zack Snyder once again proved that time, reboots, and studio shake-ups can’t erase the bond between a director and his Superman. On May 5, in honor of Henry Cavill’s 42nd birthday, Snyder shared a heartfelt tribute on social media—a behind-the-scenes photo that quietly carried the weight of nearly five decades of Superman legacy.

The photo Snyder posted to his X account wasn’t just a throwback—it was a statement. It showed Cavill in 2011, during his early screen tests for Man of Steel, donning a replica of Christopher Reeve’s iconic 1978 Superman suit. The image served as a symbolic bridge between the past and future of the character, connecting Cavill’s modern take with the classic portrayal that defined an era. “Happy Birthday to my friend, amazing actor, and greatest Superman of all time,” Snyder wrote, adding hashtags for Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League.

The post reignited the age-old debate over who truly deserves the title of the greatest Superman. A fan poll in the comments showed 64% agreeing with Snyder’s sentiment, though others—especially loyalists to Reeve—offered respectful dissent. Regardless, Snyder’s message was clear: Cavill remains his Superman.

Even after both men stepped away from the DC Extended Universe—Cavill unexpectedly and Snyder voluntarily—their mutual respect remains intact. Snyder previously honored Cavill on Superman Day (April 18) with a similarly nostalgic image, underscoring how central Cavill was to his vision of the DCU. Reflecting on Cavill’s brief appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, Snyder remarked, “Any coins left on the table are unfortunate… I always think you could have more Henry.”

While James Gunn now reboots the DC Universe with David Corenswet set to debut as Superman this July, Cavill isn’t slowing down. The fan-favorite actor is preparing for a new era, leading Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot and producing a Warhammer 40,000 adaptation for television.

Still, to Snyder—and to millions of fans—Cavill’s cape never quite came off. As long as there are birthdays to celebrate and legacies to remember, Zack Snyder will continue reminding the world of the Superman who soared in Man of Steel.
