Mark Wahlberg Almost Ruined His Burger Empire—Find Out Why He Hated the Name Wahlburgers

Mark Wahlberg is well-known for his acting career, his music with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, and his entrepreneurial ventures. But one of his most popular ventures is Wahlburgers, a family-owned burger chain that has grown to 109 locations by the end of 2023. However, the journey to creating Wahlburgers wasn’t as easy as it might seem, particularly when it came to the name of the restaurant.

At the Restaurant Leadership Conference held at the JW Marriott Resort in Phoenix, Wahlberg shared candid insights about his initial hesitation towards the name Wahlburgers. When his brother, Paul Wahlberg, a chef, first pitched the idea for the burger restaurant, Mark was fully on board with the concept. But when Paul suggested the name Wahlburgers, Mark wasn’t thrilled. “Fuck no,” Wahlberg recalled saying, explaining his concern that using the family name would hinder his credibility as an actor. “I’ve worked way too hard … I’m trying to be credible as an actor,” he admitted.

However, as he reflected on the opportunity, Wahlberg realized that the venture could actually be a significant step forward, not just for his family but for his own brand as well. “This is actually a wonderful opportunity,” he said, recognizing the potential for success in a crowded and competitive market.

The conversation touched on Wahlberg’s diverse career, from his rough early years as one of nine children, including some prison time in his teens, to his music career in the ’90s, his acting career with roles in The Departed and Boogie Nights, and his entrepreneurial success across various sectors. He also discussed his commitment to his businesses, ranging from restaurants and fitness ventures to a tequila brand and the prayer app, Hallow. “If you go out there and you put your head down and you do the work? There isn’t anything you can’t accomplish,” he said, emphasizing the importance of hard work.

Wahlberg’s roots are tied to creativity, particularly in the kitchen, where his parents often “made something out of nothing.” This hands-on approach to life in the Wahlberg household is reflected in Paul Wahlberg’s culinary career. Paul opened Alma Nove, a Mediterranean and Italian restaurant in Hingham, Massachusetts, in 2010, and shortly after, the first Wahlburgers location opened in 2011, just around the corner from the family restaurant.

Despite initially opposing the idea of the reality TV show that featured Wahlburgers from 2014 to 2019, Wahlberg revealed that his brother Paul eventually became attached to the concept. “They went from not liking the show or the idea of the show, to being mad when the show was going off the air,” Wahlberg joked, showing how both he and his brother had become deeply involved in the business and its marketing.

Wahlberg’s approach to business sets him apart from other celebrity-backed brands. While many celebrities lend their names to products or ventures without much involvement, Wahlberg’s level of engagement with Wahlburgers has been unparalleled. “I’ve been very involved,” he emphasized, noting that he and Paul have been driving the business from the very beginning. Their hands-on approach has clearly paid off, with Wahlburgers growing to 109 locations by the end of 2023.

However, as the company has expanded, Wahlberg also acknowledged the difficulties that come with the restaurant business, particularly when it comes to its profitability and operational challenges. In January 2023, the 79 Wahlburgers locations inside Hy-Vee grocery stores in the Midwest were shut down. When asked about the obstacles he faced in the food and beverage industry, Wahlberg didn’t hold back. “Not do it,” he deadpanned when asked what he would do differently if he could go back. “People always say how tough the restaurant business is. There is no easy business … It’s a very, very tough business.”

Despite the challenges, Wahlberg’s commitment to his restaurant business remains steadfast, and Wahlburgers continues to thrive, serving up burgers, family pride, and a touch of Hollywood star power. While he may have been reluctant to embrace the name at first, Wahlberg has ultimately come to see it as an integral part of his entrepreneurial journey—one that continues to evolve with time, hard work, and a little bit of humor.
