Blake Lively’s Bakery Stunt Triggers Backlash, Yelp War, and Health Probe

Blake Lively, known for her roles in Gossip Girl and A Simple Favor, is no stranger to the spotlight, but her recent visit to a Connecticut donut shop has landed her in the middle of a fresh controversy. The actress, who is already embroiled in a heated legal battle with her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni, found herself facing backlash after participating in a seemingly innocent PR stunt at Rise Doughnuts in Wilton on Friday.
Lively’s visit, which she shared with her followers on Instagram, quickly spiraled into a viral controversy. In her post, Lively appeared in the kitchen, baking donuts with the staff, and gleefully posted footage of the experience, including a photo of her working with a massive kitchen mixer. She captioned the post, “Baking with genius food friends and their kitchen mixer the size of a car. This is what my happy place looks like…”
While Lively’s caption may have conveyed enthusiasm for the experience, her followers had a different reaction. The actress, dressed casually for the occasion, was criticized for not wearing a hairnet while preparing food. Fans were quick to take to social media, calling the situation “disgusting” and raising concerns about food safety practices at the establishment. Some even questioned the shop’s sanitation standards, accusing Lively of setting a poor example for hygiene in a food prep environment.
This backlash quickly grew, and multiple complaints were filed with the Wilton Health Department, accusing the donut shop of violating health code regulations. Among the many complaints was a particularly harsh review on Yelp, where a user named J.J. wrote, “Is it the practice at this doughnut shop to allow employees handling the food to wear their hair loose & hang a few inches above a tray of doughnuts?” The user went on to criticize the shop for not requiring employees to wear hairnets, questioning the shop’s commitment to food safety.
Others joined in, echoing the same sentiment, with one reviewer stating, “No matter who is baking or serving, food safety guidelines need to be followed,” and adding, “Friends shouldn’t be hanging out in the food prep areas, leaning on equipment and not having their hair up.”
However, sources later told TMZ that many of the complaints and negative reviews originated from individuals who had never even visited the donut shop, with some not even residing in Connecticut. These allegations were seen as part of a “retaliation campaign” linked to Lively’s ongoing legal dispute with Baldoni.
Despite the wave of online criticism, the Wilton Health Department ultimately cleared Rise Doughnuts of any wrongdoing. Following an investigation prompted by the anonymous complaints, health inspectors found no evidence of health code violations at the shop. The shop, which is a family-owned business, was exonerated, but the incident sparked a conversation about celebrity influence and the impact of online mobs on small businesses.
For now, the controversy appears to have died down, with no further actions taken against the donut shop. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the intense scrutiny celebrities often face, especially when it comes to seemingly innocuous acts like visiting a local business for a promotional stunt. In this case, what was meant to be a fun moment for Lively and her fans quickly became the center of a viral debate about food safety and the responsibilities that come with celebrity influence.
