How Mark Wahlberg Faked His Way Into ‘Invincible’—And It Worked

Mark Wahlberg’s career is a testament to his versatility, spanning a wide array of roles from an adult film star in Boogie Nights to a grieving father in The Lovely Bones and an undercover cop in The Departed. His ability to step into diverse characters has made him one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, even if his Boston accent occasionally sneaks through—something that sometimes works in his favor and other times doesn’t.
But one of the more intriguing stories from Wahlberg’s career comes from his role in Invincible (2006), a film based on the true story of Vince Papale, a man who went from working-class Philadelphia to playing as a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s. Wahlberg plays Papale, who, against all odds, finds himself on the NFL team, becoming an unlikely hero for both the city and its embattled football franchise.
Though Wahlberg delivers a commendable performance as the inspirational everyman, his path to landing the role was a bit more complicated than he let on. According to the actor himself, during his audition, he lied about his football experience to secure the part. “I lied. I said I played college football,” Wahlberg admitted during an interview with Radio Free. “Obviously, I had never gone to college, I never played high school football.” This was a bit of a stretch, considering Wahlberg didn’t even play high school football, let alone college, but his love for the sport played a crucial role in landing him the role.
“I played football in the neighborhood. I played every sport, but we didn’t play with equipment. The first time I ever put on equipment was in an NFL uniform, which was pretty cool,” Wahlberg continued, adding that his lack of formal football experience wasn’t going to stand in the way of his passion for the film and his desire to portray such a remarkable story.
Although Wahlberg was already a fan of football, it wasn’t until he received the Invincible script and watched a 90-second highlight reel from NFL Films that he learned about Vince Papale’s incredible journey. “I didn’t know the Vince Papale story until I was sent the script,” he confessed. “I was blown away. It’s an amazing story.” The role had become more than just another chance to take on a challenging part—it was a personal connection to something Wahlberg felt passionate about.
Despite his initial fib about playing college football, Wahlberg didn’t rely solely on a stunt double for his physical scenes, as one might expect from an actor with no formal football training. “That was me,” Wahlberg revealed, talking about a scene where his character gets tackled on the sideline. “But that particular hit actually fixed my bad back. It did. I was hurting from shooting and taking a lot of hits. The guy just cleaned me—he cleaned my closet. It was like everything kind of popped back into place. They were so worried they ran in, and everybody was dead silent.”
Wahlberg’s enthusiasm for doing his own stunts paid off in this case, adding a level of authenticity to the film. His commitment to the role, both emotionally and physically, helped elevate Invincible into something more than just another sports movie. While it may not have been one of his most famous roles, Invincible stands out as a solid and heartfelt film that showcases Wahlberg’s ability to step into a character’s shoes, even if it meant stretching the truth a bit in the audition room.
In the grand scheme of Wahlberg’s career, Invincible might not rank as highly as his more prominent action films or comedies, but it stands as one of his more grounded and meaningful performances—far superior to his work in the Transformers franchise, which is not saying much in terms of quality. Nonetheless, Wahlberg’s journey to playing Vince Papale shows his determination and work ethic, even when it involves a little white lie. In the end, it was a gamble that worked out—and provided audiences with a heartwarming story of an underdog making it big.
