In a rare public reflection on her relationship with her famous older sisters, Elizabeth Olsen shared her admiration for the unique bond that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen share, and explained how she never felt the need to compete with their connection. Speaking on Today with Jenna & Friends on March 25, 2025, the WandaVision star discussed the dynamics of growing up in a large family and how her relationship with her twin sisters influenced her own career path.

A Unique and Uncompeting Bond

Though Elizabeth Olsen has often kept her thoughts on her siblings private, this week she opened up about her admiration for the strong partnership that Mary-Kate and Ashley, who gained fame at a young age through Full House and later as fashion designers with The Row, have cultivated over the years. “I really admire the partnership that [Mary-Kate and Ashley] have and don’t compete with it, in a way,” she shared. “It’s something different. It’s a really interesting thing to watch. I admire it. It’s a different kind of connection.”

For Elizabeth, this partnership is something special to witness, and while she feels the deep admiration for it, she explained that she doesn’t feel the need to compete with it—acknowledging that each sibling’s relationship is unique.

Growing Up with a Close Bond

Elizabeth, the youngest of six siblings, spoke warmly about her experience of being the baby of the family, a role she said she truly enjoyed. She told hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush (who are twins themselves) that being the youngest of her siblings brought her a lot of joy. “I loved it, especially being the baby. I really enjoyed it,” she said, smiling at the dynamic her large family provided.

Her comments highlighted a sense of fulfillment and love within her family unit, with Elizabeth appreciating the connection shared with her older twin sisters, even if there was a bond between them that she could never fully experience. “There’s something that I’ll never experience of that connection, but I feel lucky to be witness to it,” she said in a previous interview with Harper’s Bazaar. She continued, expressing that being the younger sister of twins offered unique advantages, both in terms of watching them navigate the world and feeling protected by their experience. “I actually think it’s an amazing feeling, being the younger sibling to twin sisters,” Olsen reflected. “If I was spoiled by one, the other wanted to match it. I loved it.”

Navigating the Entertainment Industry

Despite the tight-knit relationship she shares with Mary-Kate and Ashley, Elizabeth Olsen admitted that she initially felt hesitant about entering the entertainment industry, especially given her sisters’ massive fame. She expressed concerns about nepotism, particularly about being seen solely as the younger sibling of two of the most famous twin actresses at the time. “I thought, ‘I don’t want to be associated with [Mary-Kate and Ashley] for some reason,'” she told Glamour U.K.. She went on to describe her understanding of nepotism at a young age, admitting that even as a 10-year-old, she felt a sense of unease about the potential stigma of gaining opportunities through family connections.

“I guess I understood what nepotism was like inherently as a 10-year-old,” she continued, adding that it stemmed from a deep-seated desire to earn her own place in the industry. “I don’t know if I knew the word, but there is some sort of association of not earning something that I think bothered me at a very young age,” she explained. Despite these insecurities, Olsen eventually found her own way into acting, proving her talent and earning recognition for her roles in films like Martha Marcy May Marlene and Avengers: Age of Ultron, among others.

A Protective Older Sister Dynamic

Looking back, Elizabeth also fondly recalled the sense of protection she felt from her twin sisters. “I always felt that having older twin sisters was an advantage. I felt very clear about how I was going to navigate lots of things because of watching them. I also felt very protected,” she said. While she acknowledges that there are aspects of their twin connection she will never experience, she feels grateful for the unique dynamic they shared.

Elizabeth’s admiration for her sisters’ partnership, coupled with her own journey as an actress, paints a picture of a family that has supported one another despite the immense pressure of public scrutiny. It’s clear that while she has always been grateful for her relationship with her sisters, Elizabeth has carved out her own path in the industry, proving that she is more than just the “little sister” of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Through her candid reflections, Elizabeth Olsen gives a glimpse into her family life, her personal insecurities, and the deep admiration she holds for her twin sisters. Their bond, she says, is unique and something to be admired, but ultimately, Elizabeth has been able to embrace her own individuality and succeed on her own terms.
