Jennifer Lopez is once again generating Oscar buzz as her new movie-musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, prepares for a highly anticipated Fall 2025 release. After receiving a standing ovation at its Sundance premiere, the film has been acquired by Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and LD Entertainment for North American distribution.
Directed by Bill Condon, who also adapted the screenplay, the film reimagines the Fred Kander and Fred Ebb musical based on Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. Set against the backdrop of 1980s Argentina, Kiss of the Spider Woman tells the story of two prisoners clinging to fantastical tales and performances from the enigmatic Spider Woman (played by Lopez) to survive the brutal dictatorship.
The role has long been associated with powerful performances. Chita Rivera won a Tony for her portrayal on Broadway, and William Hurt earned an Academy Award for the non-musical 1986 film adaptation. Now Lopez steps into the spotlight as Ingrid/Aurora/The Spider Woman, alongside co-stars Diego Luna (known for Andor) and breakout talent Tonatiuh. Together, the trio’s performances have been hailed as deeply moving and multifaceted.
Roadside Co-Presidents Eric d’Arbeloff and Howard Cohen described the film as “a trio of multifaceted performances” paired with a “spectacular Kander and Ebb score,” setting high expectations for the film’s upcoming release. Lopez herself shared her passion for the project, telling the Sundance audience, “The thing about the movie that I love the most is that it tells of the importance of storytelling. How it can help you get through the day, and how it helps all of us.”
Condon, an Oscar winner for Gods and Monsters and the screenwriter of the hit musical Chicago, called the project a labor of love. “All of us who made this film believe it needs to be experienced in a theater, so we’re grateful and excited,” Condon said. This enthusiasm is mirrored by Lopez’s hopes for the film to resonate with audiences and perhaps bring her closer to that elusive Oscar win.
With no exact release date yet set, Kiss of the Spider Woman is expected to arrive in theaters in Fall 2025, poised to be a major player in the year’s awards race.
